FRUSTRATED!!!

getting outbid on ebay for a refurbished rebel xt !!!

must control myself, plenty of opportunities still available, must not over spend!!!

any other good places/suggestions to purchase used dslr? Nikon or Canon?

Sort the auctions by ending time, and pay attention to auctions ending very early in the morning or very late at night.

Use a tabbed browser to keep multiple tabs open on the same auction. That way you can have a tab ready that will only need a single click to submit your bid. Or use sniping software.

Finally, write down a firm price you are not willing to pay more than (including shipping). Then subtract shipping for the auction you're interested in from that price. That is your bid price. Enter that bid and submit it in the last 10 seconds of an auction.

nikonians probably as well

these are all big photo forums. i know the first three have pretty active buy/sell boards.
also check fs/ft here. though mostly it's computer parts, cameras do show up. and i think the price may be a little lower here than on dedicated photography sites.

helps if you have some refs somewhere.

You can only post on Nikonians if you have a Nikon. It's in their agreement when you sign up. There was a guy on POTN that posted over there and they asked him to leave when they found out that he didn't have a Nikon.

Pretty lame IMO.

I'm a nikon fan myself, and left the nikonians website when i heard about that

personally...i think the fredmiranda.com community is the best photography community on the net

i think im giving up on ebay, i think the users in europe are wayyyy overbidding the prices

i found a local shop that is selling around $310 after tax for a used Rebel XT . they are providing a 90 day money back too . sounds good?

I then plan on buying a 17-85 IS lens for around $400 new or cheaper for used and a 50mm prime lens.....sounds good?

$310 for an XT is good.

The 17-85mm IS got poor reviews.

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 would be a better alternative.

Or a Tokina 12-24mm f/4 if you want to shoot much wider.

And yes, the 50mm prime is a good buy.

The EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS is a lens that promises many things. It is certainly a very versatile standard zoom with a long zoom range and an image stabilizer that can save the day in many situations. However, the build quality is somewhat disappointing and optically it is also something of a mixed bag. The lens is very sharp in the image center throughout the range but at the wide-end the extreme corners leave something to be desired. The 17mm setting also suffers from rather extreme distortions and rather hefty vignetting @ f/4. Finally chromatic aberrations aren't really something to rave about either.

So at the end of the day the lens is a tad better than the cheapo EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 but it can't really compete with the new EF-S 18-55m f/3.5-5.6 IS or the EF 17-40mm f/4 USM L. The key feature of the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS remains its versatility. While this may sound a little sceptical I should note that I preferred the lens compared to other higher quality options during testing - it is simply a darn convenient lens and despite the flaws it can produce very decent images as you can see from the samples - at least with a little tool support.

hmmmm . what would you do if you had $400? would you get the 17-85 IS? the tampron? or get the 18-55 IS and save money the extra money for a 3rd lens ie a 100mm macro prime?

(I want to do macro for sure...)

Get the 18-55mm IS, save your money for a real macro lens.

Doesn't matter. They didn't care.

There were many people offering to send him old old film Nikons or a broken P&S Nikon or something so he could say he had one lol.

I read the thread...he made the comment of "Aren't we all just Photographers first?"

It was pretty stupid IMO.

that does seem pretty stupid. you'd think that they'd all want to welcome another one into the fold. I'm technically a member, though a non-paying one and not very active.

Adorama has Rebel XT's refurbished by Canon for $325. They also give a 90 day warranty. I would trust a refurb over a used at (practically) the same price.

Edit: Actually a few weeks ago they were $325, they are now $335

adorama is in the USA . im afraid of import tax,

the used camera is from Henry's Camera . theres a 14 day money back guarantee as well i believe

right now the 100mm lens is 380shipped . still tempted to save the 100, cause it comes with a UV filter as well.....and thats worth $20?
