Grrr...the ARROGANCE

Okay, the scenario...I'm a grad student stuck teaching a low level MS Office/Intro to Computers class. Not exactly my first choice, but it's not too bad overall. So anyway, this kid comes to me during my office hours with a question about the homework, and says straight up that this class is a humongous waste of his time. Talk about the nerve. I tell him there's no attendance policy, so if he doesn't like the class, he shouldn't show up. Furthermore, I told him that students like him are about 5% of the class, while the other 95% really don't know about Office. Just irks me, ya know? Granted, Office isn't exactly the most exciting thing to teach, but I'm trying. Any ideas on how to reach kids like this? Or is it just best to let them be?

well if it is a required class and he knows it all...then i dont see why u are mad...i mean he isnt putting u down

if its not required...then just go and beat him down

Just let him be.

Can I ask you a question though, what do they mean when they say object linking and embedding between word and excel? 😀

They need to bring the paddle back, dammit.

You are under know responsibility either real or implied to set the a$$hat straight. Let it be. Real life after college will be a rude awakening richly deserved.

I'd answer it, but I don't need this class. It's a humongous waste of my time.

😛

Seriously. You already told him he doesn't have to show up. Just turn in work, right? That's it then. Leave him be...

I would get too upset over it, I'm sure you know there are always varying skill levels in any class. Besides most classes ARE a waste of time. School is a test to see if you can get through it to show that you are a responsible person. Regardless, he sounds like a punk to say that the way he did.

I would have said "It must not be a complete waste of your time - you're here to ask me a question about the homework, aren't you?"

Yeah, I'm teachin' undergrads. I'm not so much mad, more than shocked.

is it a required course...if so he might be right...i used to say that to my prof. all the time when i was a senior and had to take Intro. to CS. my second sem. senior year to get a minor in it (the class is just prof. coming in talking about their high level courses, which i had already taken)...i used to tell everyone that was a huge waste of my time

Say this to him:

Are you quitting on me?! Well, are you?! Then quit, you slimy fscking walrus-looking piece of sh!t! Get the fsck out of my class! Now! Move it! I'm going to rip your balls off, so you cannot contaminate the rest of the world! I will motivate you, Private Pyle, if it short-dicks every cannibal on the Congo!

😀

Yeah, it's pretty useless for most people you'd find on AT, but most of the class is composed of fresh/soph. kids with basic computer skills. Most of them haven't touched Excel or heard of Access. Frankly, I'd much rather have some sort of exemption test for them...I'm sympathetic...I've been in quite a few of these classes as an undergrad. I keep my policy pretty lenient; I told the class they can do pretty much anything they want, so long as they don't disrupt their neighbor. So far it's worked out pretty well; the ones who are interested/polite sit up front while the Solitaire whizkids sit in the back.

Cool! after that, you can tell him this:

You little scumbag! I got your name, I got your ass! You will not laugh, you will not cry, you will learn by the numbers I will teach you. Now get up, get on your feet! You had best un-fsck yourself or I will unscrew your head and sh!t down your neck!
