grrr..... outsource techs suck! (tech support rant, if that's not obvious)

I work as desktop tech support over the phone. Standard warranty on our systems is for 3 years. I just had a call on a system that was shipped in 1995, where an outsourced technician one month ago told the client that we would replace their 1 GB HDD. They even got their supervisor's approval! A system 3 years out of warranty, and some idiot promises the client we will replace a part that's not even manufactured any more!

Apologies to anybody who may work as an outsourced employee, just needed to rant...


BTW, may as well use this as a tech horror story thread. If you have any similar stories to add (you know who you are) go ahead...

WOW! At my company the opposite is true. The internal techs are the ones who don't know their ass from a hole n the ground.

Yakko, I could tell some stories about internal techs too if I went back in my memory... today I'm just ranting about outsourcers. :)

I hear ya there palad. My company outsourced the helpdesk to a bunch of &quot;Paper MCSEs&quot; that know jack squat. Now I basically support everything at my site plus 4 other sites that are fed up with the inconpetance.

Some golden nuggets:

Windows 2000 is not based on the Windows NT kernel
Windows 2000 = Windows ME
Hard drive platters are not made of aluminum or glass but lots of mylar like a stack of floppy disks
The only networking protocol is TCP/IP (What's IPX/SPX and NETBEUI?)
IIS is the best web server software out there (Apache? Native Americans make a web server?)
What's a Duron?
What is a command line?
RAID5 is the really strong stuff to kill big roaches right?

Just off the top of my head.

I don't mind the ranting compared to the other companies that are outsourced like us we got them beat by a mile too.

While not about a tech, it something to rant about anyways. Went to Fry's electronics today to ask about a line conditioner. I get the deer in the head lights look from the sales guy. I said never mind I go find it myself.

i can never stand help desks. they call me up and i do the work and they have me waiting on the damn phone waiting for them to look up the ticket and close it before letting me go. damn, some people got work to do and can't stand around for you to look up something you misplaced damn it. sorry, ranting here too.

i was always doing desktop support and then i got shafted to helpdesk one day. i went to my manager after 4 hours and said i'm not staying here past today if i'm going to be working phones.

i wonder if anyone would trust the same person to fix the machine that screwed it up as well.

I had a field tech call me today asking how to tattoo(flash) a BIOS on an HP.
The first thing he asked me was, where do I get the tattoo program?
I'm like, look at those black square shaped things they sent you, they should say HP TATTOO FOR MODEL#xxxx.
OK where do I put it?
/me mutes phone &quot;UP your friggen A$$.

Oh!

I get a new stupid tech story every day.

Now, let me say that I'm not a tech guru, I know 95/98/ME and desktop hardware, but I have little practical experience with 2000, NT, or setting up networks, so of course there are calls I get where I have to grab some help, but I like to think I am at least aware of the things I am weak in, and can study up on them.

Frankly I hate doing Tech support over the phone. I'm as likely to tell sonmeone they are stupid as I am to help them. My own family doesn't even call me iup for help as I always yell at them for screwing up their systems. I think I need to work on my people skills.

What are you talkin about? Red Dawn you are the most likeable person on the planet! I dont know anyone on this forum that doesnt think you are super neeto. :p

I'd use that quote in my sig but I think its silly to use other member's quotes in their sigs.
