Grrr I just found out I lost my credit card ...

I'm so pissed right now. Yesterday I realized my credit card couldn't be found and I checked online on my statement and nothing had been charged. I didn't call right away because I thought I may have left it at work.

So I get to work today and it's not here, and I checked on the statement online and it had been updated. Someone went shopping with my card and racked up about $600 worth of stuff at a variety of stores. I truly have no idea where I dropped it.

So now it's cancelled and I have to wait 7-10 days to get a new card as well as a form I have to fill out saying I did not authorize these charges. Then I have to mail it back and they said I won't have to pay for these things that were bought when the card was lost.

The thing that pisses me off is that I purposely don't have my card signed so that they have to ask for ID at places, and I guess not many places even care considering this person went to 2 different Sears, Giant Food, Ikea, and went to the same Bombay Company store 2 times.

I am beyond pissed right now because I can't even do anything about it. Will this hurt my credit score having to do some kind of charge back on my account?

That sucks. Im not sure if it will affect your credit score or not, but at least you arent liable for the charges. I had something similar happen to me a few months ago on my debit card. Apparently, someone took out nearly $1000 using Western Union. I signed and returned an affidavit form.

A lot of places do not check for ID. Mostly, it's resturaunts and definetly grocery stores. Another tactic that would work in favor of the theif would be to purchase goods at a store where they know the cashier.

I have done the same for the last 5 years. I can count the number of times i've actually been asked for ID on my two hands.

This is a foolish strategy. If someone gets your card, they can proceed to sign your name on it. Guess what? Their signature is now a perfect match to the card.

But, as orakle pointed out, many places pay no attention to the signature anyway.

Now you know how really dumb that is to do. They got the card, could sign it, charge stuff and - guess what - their signature on the card matched their signature on the receipt.

Writing "See ID" on the back of your card doesn't force the store to ask, but it can allow the clerk to deny you the sale unless you sign the card. They don't have to accept unsigned cards.

Do both - sign AND write SEE ID -technically they are not supposed to accept it if it has not been signed (even w/ SEE ID on the back).
Also, when I worked in retail, most people who wrote "See ID" on the back were actually suprised (and thankful) that I asked for their ID - I guess most clerks dont even check

That sucks man, I know how you feel. I had my card stolen from my mailbox (my box was broken into) and the fucker when shopping in tune of over $2,000. I had no idea, because I had just applied for the card and I didn't find out until I received my first statement.

Anyways, the cashiers are not required to check your ID. Writing "see ID" or not signing the card does jack squat. Have you ever seen that Mastercard's "Pay Pass" commercial where the buyer just scans his card and he is good to go?

It wont affect your credit score. Worse thing here is you will get a new card with a new number and have to fill out some forms. No big deal.

Can't believe you actually took the risk of hoping it would be at your work place rather than immediately cancelling the card.

Cancelling your card and being inconvenienced for a little bit by not having the card GREATLY outweighs the risks of going through all that you are going through now.

Also, technically the card is not valid unless you sign the back.

There were only 2 times I've lost my stuff.

1) I lost my entire wallet at a Tim Hortons. I was there with a bunch of friends and I must have forgotten it somehow. Luckily for me, a couple of police officers picked it up, found my address on my drivers license and returned it. Phew!

2) I went to the ATM a couple weeks ago to take out some cash. I took my cash and put it in my wallet but forgot to take my card out. The ATMs make a beeping noise if it detects your card there but I wasn't paying attention and didn't hear it. Sure enough, later on that day I found that my debit card went missing. Went to the branch that the ATM was attached to and got my card back. w00t!

No harm done in both cases.

I was using my credit card for the last 2 years and it wasn't even signed.

Finally some guy at the post office told me I have to sign it, after I showed him my license.

I think only one cashier has checked my card in the past couple months regardless of how much I spend. Oddly enough it was at Wal-Mart of all places....

EDIT: Now that I think about it, Wal-Mart may be one of the only stores that checks my card at least sometimes (almost always on electronics).

When I worked in retail I never checked ID's unless I thought it was fraud (i.e. suspcious person, lots of electronics stuff or just shady looking) I had caught quite a few people in my few teenage years working retail but overall I would say about 5% of the time expect your ID to be checked even if you write See ID.

well I don't use this card often at all. in fact I haven't used it since I was in Cancun in July so I have no idea how it slipped out of my wallet at all.

And the thing is, these charges didn't show up yesterday on my online statement because they were still "pending". When I checked today, it had a date of August 9th and August 10th that the actual purchases were made.

But yah this is a tough lesson learned. I'm giong to sign my card from now on and also write SEE ID.

no it doesn't, if signatures were required for CCs you wouldn't be able to use them online

Not smart at all if the credit card company finds this out and can prove he signed your card and you didn't, you can be liable for the charges, because you never accepted the terms of the credit card technically. AKA their protection against fraudulent charges is your signature, a retailer can not force you to show ID to complete a transaction its against their merchant contract. (Unless its a unsigned card and they are suppose to force you to sign the card many don't aslong as you have ID). So basically all the thief had to do was pick your card up sign it and a retailer couldn't deny any sale because his signature would match the one on the card.

Didn't read the whole thread so I don't know if anyone posted this, but here goes:

Signing the back of the card is how you agree to the cardholder agreement. If your card is not signed, it is not valid. Unless your name is "See ID" or "Check ID", then putting one of those on the back of your card is not a valid signature.

IF a card does not have a valid signature, the Visa/Mastercard and probably Amex/Discover rules require the retailer request ID and make you sign the card in their presence before using it.

That is also the ONLY case in which a retailer can require you to show ID to use a credit card (per merchant agreements). They can ASK you to show ID, but if you refuse they cannot refuse the sale.

And while we're on the topic of credit card myths and misconceptions - Visa and Mastercard allow retailers to charge a surcharge as long as it is phrased as a "cash discount." American Express allows a surcharge as long as it is applied to all other credit cards.
