*SIGH*

Had 20 people over Thanksgiving and I knew people would be using my PCs so I made sure to "idiot" proof them as much as possible. I created a "guest" accound for each PC and sure enough people DLed stuff and tried to install it. No harm done so I'll leave it. It seems my network at home was erratic all day and I finally figured out why. Despite a sigh. "NETWORK SERVER. PLEASE DO NOT USE" some idiot decidied that they were special and don't need to heed my reuqest. A ton of sh!t was installed (Media Player, Napster, Real Player, AOL IM, and other stupid utilities). The system tray was a phuckin mess. Windows 2K Server just didn't seem to like all that junk. I'm glad I have a backup tape from Monday so it should be back on it feet soon. Seems the culprit forgot to log out of email so I know who to go after.

Next year, each person will have to request a logon account.

Ok, how many PCs do you have exactly? Your family must feel extra special, because most of my family is scared to death of a computer... DONT ASK

I only have two computers networked, and not to mention them being scared of them, they know that sh*t would hit the fan if they ever messed with my stuff...

LOL. I know what you mean. Whenever we have guests with little kids I have to give em a good smack and then they get off the computer.

The only member of my family there was my brother. The others were friends (mine and my girlfriend's) and their acquaintances. I just check AOL IM and Napster and now I'm VERY sure who it is. I'm kinda angry at the whole situation. Hmmmm.... I do have "I Love You" on disk at the office.

3 desktops and my work laptop + server and FREESCO router online.

I turned off the breaker to my main one and claimed it was "broken"....took the side covers off the other ones, unplugged a couple of things to make the wires look messy, and claimed they were broken and needed parts :) After all the "adults" and little kids went home, I was back to near normal.

I know what ya mean. It sounds pretty annoying in your case. I mean, can't people read a sign and respect it? Especially if they are a guest somewhere!

And to download garbage like that (when clearly it is a "server" machine :))! :(

You should have just left the server on with a password protected screensaver enabled or something. Or just shut off the monitor and unplug it. ;)

There's maybe three people I would let use my PC. Those are the ones I trust enough to not do anything stupid. If someone downloaded stuff and caused me to have to waste two hours time to put it back together I'd be DAMN IRATE! I would have to seriously consider banning them from the house. :)

Dang, what is your electric bill? I only have two desktops, and once in a while a 3rd, and my dad won't stop complaining about the electric bill....

Why didn't you just lock the server? Then they wouldn't have been able to do anything... :)

Geez, I'd go ballistic if anyone did anything to this machine... good thing it's in a lockable case, and thus could only be powered on with the secret key combo that only I know (gotta love keyboard poweron...)

Looking at it now, I'll take 1/2 the blame for not "locking" it out. My excuse, I was cooking and none of usual guests have ever touched the system. Who in their right mind would want to use a system with a old 14" monitor for doing anything when there are more tempting targets?

Lesson for others (beside locking servers): Backup on a regular basis.

Borrow the idiot's car, and park it the distance of a two-hour walk from his house. When he returns, tell him that's the same amount of YOUR time he wasted, maybe he'll keep hands off in the future.

[edit]Joecool223, how far down did this post go in the three minutes since Windogg posted to earn that bump? :p [/edit]

Nobody touches my computer without my supervision. Period.

Matter of fact, I'm planning to take my Dreamcast upstairs cause everytime my parents have guests over their kids seem to enjoy messing with it hardcore (permanent marker = not cool).

The "He" is actually a "She". Sad part is she once considered going into IT. After an interview she came to me and asked if I knew what Microsoft "Acclerator" does. "Uhh.... Accelerator, Access, Acell..... Do you mean Microsoft Excel???"

"Yea that's it"

Needless to say she didn't get the job. She is doing some low level finance work right now but still want to make the "big buck" working on "big computers"

WERD UP!!! Last year, I got tired of my roommate's friends messing with my computer, so I put up a password protected screensaver. I come back one day, and they were watching a movie. I asked them how they got through the screensaver. Their reply? "Yeah, there was a password for your screensaver, so we just rebooted your comp." Man did I blow a fvcking gasket... hard rebooting... imagine if I were copying files and they screwed up my hd? I would've gotten ballistic on their asses. Anyway... that's why I have a bios password now... and they don't dare step into the room no more. You just gotta show who's boss.. and if that doesn't work, physically show them who's boss...

<< physically show them who's boss... >>

Thats my first method ;). I only let my family members, close friends and only one of my cousins use all the comps. If not one of them, gotta lay the smackdown :D!

Edit: Don't you hate it when they think they have complete access to your room/computer and just looking through everything!!

I tell them that the day they touch my computer is the day I won't be alive. It's password protected at boot.

i have no problem with people using my comp as long as they know what they are doing and if they have respect for me allowing them to use my GHZ comp. i would go crazy. i spent a whole weekend fixing something on my comp because someone did something that they didn't know. and then they told me i did something and crashed your comp. the worse part of it was they didn't know or remember or want to tell me what they did that lead to it being rendered with errors and fualts up the ying yang. i hate that.

sounds familiar -
over the holidays last year I had moved back into my Parents House to save a few bucks, and feel like a Teenager again!! I had just installed Logic Audio, (A Multi-Track Recording Program) and recorded a bunch of 'Sketch' Ideas (or basic song ideas). Knowing the way my older siblings are, I should've locked the Computer out. but I didn't, and they were screwing around, and I guess locked the computer up, and never told me. and upon re-boot guess what was missing, and nowhere to be found, my folder, with about 2 weeks of new Song Ideas, and one almost completed Mix.
A shame that I couldn't remember them!!
as for the almost completed mix, I had to spend a week re-recording the song, and re-consturcting tracks from an old back-up!!
I Learned my lesson!!
Passowrd on boot!! although, they figured out how to open the case and Clear the CMOS settings.
but that was the Christmas version of this Story!!
I'll save it for 'Twas the night before I re-arrange the Engines in their cars, I mean Christmas!!

Yeah, the thing about touching the screen bugs the hell outta me! I have a friend who used to point things out, and would get his greasy fingers all over the screen, and make it a mess. I am one who likes a VERY clean screen. Well, I later got an anti-glare screen, and this would be about half an inch closer. He didn't notice it, and went to point at something, and about broke his damn finger, let alone the anti-glare screen, because he didn't know it was close. He hasn't seemed to touch it anymore lately.....:)

argggg..... it seems some people are failing to grasp the concept of one's messing with one's pc is like digging thru the guy's closet without his permit!(well not the best analogy but works heh)
this is kinda OT, but dont you hate those who touch the monitor screens! it gives me fits when i tell kids not to make a contact with the screen with their fingertips when they have to point something... to make matters worse i used to have a glare filter on my monitor back them :(:(:( i wish there were some electroshock shield i could deploy on the monitor so nobody would dare to touch the goddamn screen! :|:|:|

I have to teach my mom how to use my computer.

I am beating her to the chase though! I'm dualbooting soon, 1 partition W2k (for me), 1 partition W98se (for me and her). Hopefully I'll get a router too so I can give her my old P166mmx to break. ;)
