Grrr.. Avira antivirus pissing me off

JEDI

first they add the Ask spyware toolbar if you choose default/suggested install option.

I just d/l the latest version for a new laptop.

I chose custom install and unchecked the stupid ASK toolbar for a new laptop.

now I got a popup in my lower right corner saying:
"web protection has been disabled. to re-activate web protection, please install the toolbar."

avira is becoming more and more scumy!

Avira was a big reason I put Ubuntu on my mother's machine. It was popping up information she didn't know how to deal with, so I changed it for MSE. I don't have much confidence in MSE's ability, and don't have a lot of confidence in A/V in general, so I just removed the whole mess. Teaching my mother how to use Unity was easier than dealing with everything else Windows. I can update everything with the package manager, and there's few viruses I have to worry about her getting.

tl;dr
Addon scamware is a lame way to make money. I'd look for something else.

You should switch anti-virus to mcafee or norton those are very well known ones and do not force you to install a toolbar to run them or any other program for that matter.

Try ESET NOD32 AntiVirus, newegg has it on sale for $10 with promo code or Kapersky IS for the same deal. You have to subscribe to the to the newsletter to get it.

Personally I've used Eset NOD32 for ages, I like the way it works and how little resources it uses with a small footprint compared to other paid AVs.

Those free AVs (MSE, AVG and Avira) are not an option, I guess you get what you paid for. MSE being at least decent about no crapware.

I didn't get that with the new version of Avira, but it did hijack my browser with a webpage and I had to use safe mode just to uninstall the crap. I use Bitdefender free on the laptop with Comodo's firewall. On the desktop I'm still searching for a good free anti-virus. I currently have Avast installed, but it slowed the loading of web pages and the damn scanner caused the loading of my downloads folder to take forever to show up. I'm thinking of installing Panda Cloud.

On the desktop I need to be able the exclude folders and paths for false positives otherwise I would install Bitdefender free on the desktop.
