GRRR... 6800GT dying. spoke too soon perhaps.

I have heard a couple of people who put on a Silencer on their GT had the card die.
One thing to consider is the temps of the memory. You don't see the ram temps in the NVidia control panel. The ram can not handle the same temps as the GPU.
WIth the Silencer it is making the ram come in contact with the same plate and therefore basically the same temperature as the GPU.
Could that be the problem? I am not positive about that but I am refraining from getting a NV Silencer for the moment.

Cainam's 6800GT exhibited super-hot performance right off the bat at stock speeds.

I still have my fingers crossed with mine as well. Two weeks since I rewired, no issues. I hope your card is "fixed".

I'll have to say I agree with you on the NV5/warrantee issue. Putting a better cooler on yoiur card isn't the same as frying your card with an OC/voltmod/flash and sending it back. If they didn't use shite coolers to begin with, it would be a non-issue. On the otherhand, if you're an idiot and physically damage your card when attempting to install an non-stock cooler, that is a different story.

I'm pretty adament that the original temperatures in itself were not the cause of any problems. My BFG GT is at about 65 idle and 90 under load and have no issues with it, and feel no need to be overly concerned about it. Been running fine for almost 2 months now.

Same thing happened to my BFG 6800Ultra. After about 2 months it just died and did the garbage characters everywhere/random lockups. Using this X800Pro to hold me over till I can get my hands on an XT PE. It idles at 42C which is nice also 🙂

I did some more looking at my card. The GPU and the Ram definitely have totally seperate and different heatsinks.
The VGA silencer has one heatsinkwhich touches your ram and GPU at the same time. The heat from the GPU will heat up your ram more than it would be with a seperate heatsink that is the reason for the stock one to be seperate. I would definitely not recommend that anyone use the NV silencer cooler on their 6800 GT.

well, a couple of observations..

to the poster above, the stock bfg heatsink is a single heatsink for both the memory and gpu. while there is thermal paste on gpu, there is also a "pad", which could indeed insulate (tho if that's the case i'm not sure why they also applied thermal paste.

after a couple days, my gt is still working fine. i'm still confused why it did this all of the sudden, but again all i did was remove a 12cm fan from the line, and reinstall the card. it's still working fine. haven't overclocked it, but at stock spedd (370 for the bfg) the issues have not returned.

i did reinstll the silencer, and the card is still working fine. the gpu temp dropped 5c at idle, and about 10c at full load, and ambient temp reported is 4-5 cooler at idle as well.

i'm still a bit confused by the sudden artifacts etc, but at this point i'd have to say for whatever reason the card just decided it didn't like having a fan plugged into the same line as the card.. go figure....

I think this is very good info for owners 🙂 A dedicated and unshared power connection to the card is the best possible config so don't compromise the power supply to the card or jury rig things, just do it!

never share a power molex attached to a vid card or a HD.

for some reason, ppl think you can just plug a fan in anywhere ~ and thats just not true.

Jury rig? Never heard that one. lol

I agree with Thugs about sharing ANYTHING with a fan. I've read about many problems caused by noise from the fan wires.
