I can relate. The problem is it prompts you for update, then you go through update process, then ultimately it tells you have the latest version on your computer. The next time you turn on the computer it prompts you the same thing.

I finally gave in once and did the update to get this and I was very confused.

Because oracle is still finding references to sun in the code. Got to eliminate any sign that sun ever existed!

Uninstall Java. It's not actually needed on the internet, and who really is running Java applications at home? All it's good for these days on internet-facing clients is for getting quickly exploited.

Now if Flash were that easy to get rid of...

i use a lot of java apps 0.o

i use a lot of community developed tools, and java's easy to program in, cross-platform, and the performance of the tools isnt all that important. so of course they're generally gonna use java.

Most of the java apps I've seen kind of suck. They're slow, they're buggy, they take up memory like a mofo. Of course, programmers are to blame for some of this, but the only decent java app I have seen (and the only one on my computer at the moment) is jEdit. And even that is pretty slow.

The only things about it that irritate me are that there isn't a x64 windows auto-updater, nor does the x86 updater ever seem to work under a non-admin account (even with UAC).

how many versions of java do you have on your machine? If you have 6 versions you could be still receiving patches for all of them.

Minecraft runs on Java. It's beta software so bugginess is expected, but I've seen no issues at all with performance on any of my machines/laptops, even the slowish ones with CULV cpus.

Everybody's uses are definitely different though. I code a lot of my own tools for our lab in Java. Since we run on multiple platforms, Java makes life much much easier in that regard.

that's because they're written by people who write community apps. of course they're not written by professional programmers with the same care as is given to professional programs.

i don't expect 100% stability out of my batch manga downloader. the fact that it works at all is something i'm happy for. and if there's a memory leak, oh well, after a few series i just exit it and restart it.

Adobe reader/acro does the same thing. What are they updating every 2 days? For free software I am surprised the keep it updated so often.

And why does Adobe require a restart of the machine half the time? so annoying

the restart is for the re-enabling of update monitor ser ice you disabled :)

I got very very tired of this and I can't remember what but I turned it off in some manner.

I've never had a problem with java updates. It's adobe that drives me up the wall. I really need to remember to uninstall acrobat - foxit reader works just fine. There's only one program that brings my computer to its knees, and it's acrobat. My computer suddenly turns unresponsive? ctrl-alt-del, look to see what's causing all the lag... wtf? Why is adobe acrobat running?

I remove it from the "Run" section of the registry, but also have program blocking abilities with online armor firewall, a capability I highly recommend having in your security arsenal.

Not sure how using an out-of-date Java install improves security at all. :hmm:
