i'm trying to setup a ftp in my dorm but it seems they have blocked all the ports. Is there anyway around this? Do other schools have a similar policy?

IT'S NOT A WAREZ SERVER BTW

Ummm... I can almost guarentee you that you can get it working from other rooms in your dorm... the problem is you don't have access to the firewall configuration, so you can't re-route any requests to your computer... find out your ip address, and I bet you can get it from any other room in the dorm, just not form outside... for that, you'll have to convince a systems admin that its a good idea to allow you to run an ftp

🙂

gar598, try accessing the FTP from another computer in your dorm. If that does not work then there is a problem with your computer's configuration.
What is the IP address of your FTP?

You know the IP for the schools dorm, but I guarentee you thats not the same as your individual computer. Unless your paying for internet access from outside (DSL, Cable, Dial-Up), its impossible without a quick re-configure of the dorm's firewall...

I am assuming that the dorm is providing each room with internet access...

see I can access the ftp from within the network that why i'm thinking they must be blocking some ports.

Goto GRC.com and click on the ShieldsUp logo. Run the tests there to look for open ports. You could also get someone to portscan the firewalls external IP address.

I'm telling you guys, if hes in a dorm with internet access provided BY the dorm, he won't be able to do it without convincing the systems admin to let him. I can 99.9% guarentee that he is behind some sort of firewall. Which, of course, means that even if he DID find an open port somewhere, it wouldn't re-route the request to his machine without telling the firewall too...

at some schools, you will actually have to call your ITS department and request permission to run any dameon services, check their computer policy on their web page its normally there.
