I had a canker sore in my mouth at end of last week (tiny little white part). And I ate that bastard out and now he is much larger but I haven't touched him in half a week but it still hurts like a mother. I'm pretty sure it's a canker sore and not herpes or anything...although rossman had one at the same time...hmm, but really what can I do? Are there any decent ointments that don't cost too much?

I think that anbesol (ambesol??) stuff is for toothaches and canker sores. Just for pain though.

And I ate that bastard out...

You are talking about the canker sore, right?? Please tell me that is what you were talking about...

I take large amonts of Lysine and that usually helps...... I am talking 3-4 500MG tablets in the morning and at night.

Here's what I normally do. Hurts like hell for a bit but it always works.

Get your toothbrush and dip it in Listerine. Then brush the hell out of the sore until it bleeds. After that soak a cotton ball in Listerine and apply it to the area for 10 or so minutes.

Pain killers are the only thing that work. They are basically a blister, very few are caused by disease. I suffered for years with dime sized ones nearly constantly till I figured out that chocolate causes them. If you get them often figure out what's triggering them, otherwise if this is a first stop whining like a little baby. ;) (Lanocaine or other over the counter pain killers is what you want, tylenol will help as well)

Stop chewing and try Campho-Phenique it comes as a liquid or ointment either one works but you'll need a Q-Tip to apply the liquid. It stings a little and numbs the area. Apply regularly and it takes aanywhere from 3-5 days to heal. Been using it for years and it seems to work well.

I use white vinagar, just dump a little into a cup, and sip it and hold the liquid in your mouth around the sore. Works for me, hurts, but it works.

Its sadistic, but I put a pinch full of salt directly onto the sore... let it sit for 5-10 seconds and then drink some water... the sore heals up the next day. I guess it must have something to do with the salt sucking out all the water out of the sore or some b.s. answer like that

I used to get them so much I'd have several at a time and it sucked tons. Dentist recommended lysine tablets, and also prescribed this little brownish paste stuff. It works VERY well. Before I had some gel stuff from earlier but it sucked cause gel just comes off with your saliva. So when I get one, I dab the area dry, apply with q-tip and its usually gone after just a few applications.

I also don't know why (never heard of it as helpful from anyone else, or as recommendations) but when I rinse my mouth with regular old mint mouthwash, it seems to help it for a little while.

ALso, if you get them a lot, there are several possibilities. One is the ingredient, sodium lauryl (sp?) sulfate, in toothpaste. You could try a toothpaste that doesn't contain it.

This is inside your mouth right? nasty pain, but it works... dab salt on it, repeatedly. Drink some scotch first if you want.

Well I've been drinking a lot of pop lately unfortunately. I don't get them often. Very occasionally and perhaps recent stress contributed to this one.

I did notice that sugar makes it hurt though!!!!!!!

I usually just b1tch and whine for several days, which doesn't help.

Don't do anything to it but let it heal.......... it's an open wound. If you keep on bothering it will take longer to heal.

Cheers,

Canker sores can be prolonged by bacteria eating away at them (and there's plenty of bacteria in your mouth), that's why eating sugar is bad (the bacteria can feed off of sugar), and why solutions like hydrogen peroxide help (they kill the bacteria)

Vitamin B6 should help. The canker sore has lately been linked to a vitamin deficiency and this simple vitamin seems to do the trick. I'm guessing if the vitamin idea is true then its a viral infection of some type. Inflammation of the affected cells probably causes some chain reaction that blocks vitamin synthesis. Microbiology is quickly becoming one complex world as technology gets better!

That's funny. I have a huge canker sore inside my left cheek. I have had it for close to 6 days now and it hurts like a mofo. I bought some Orabase, but it just forms a wall to cover the sore, so nothing touches it. However, after a hour or 2, the "wall" falls off and my sore is exposed.

A year ago, I got a lot of canker sores at once, which really sucked. Now, I haven't had canker sores in the LONGEST time until this one. Think it could be b/c of that toothpaste ingredient?

Edit: My current toothpaste has sodium lauryl. So, I guess it can't be that since I have been using the same toothpaste for a while.

i actually asked my doc about this yesterday. she said that its viral and theres not a whole lot you can do to prevent it, or treat it, but just to let it run its course. she gave me a rx for apthesol to treat it.
