Grr.. Dell doesn't have a DDR Optiplex.

So I need to buy a new PC for the office and the office always buys Dell. I'm spec-ing systems and I discover that there isn't an Optiplex that uses the i845D chipset. They only support SDRAM and Rambus. They actually sell a SDRAM system with a 2.4GHz P4! What's the point (other than to take money from suckers?)

I know they have a Dimension model with DDR, but the Optiplex line is supposed to be their quality line.

<--Perplexed by Optiplex.

I don't really have a huge issue with Rambus as far as price and technology, but I refuse to: 1. support a company that steals IP and sues other companies claiming it is their own, and 2. buy an EOL memory tech. DDR and DDR II are going to be around longer than Rambus and the prices will flip again as Rambus systems age and DDR becomes the norm.

<< But dude, your getting a dell!!! >>

Yeah, I'd rather BYOB, but they like the support contract. At least it isn't Compaq.

LOL! Doing more reading on their machines. Here's what they say about their Dimension with DDR:

<< Ideal for the sophisticated PC user that spends the majority of time running mainstream applications but is also interested in multimedia and occassional gaming. >>

Um, yeah. a 2.4GHz P4 on DDR is only good for occassional gaming. I'm assuming they are saying that because it's not their Rambus model. That's like saying that a Passat or Audi A4 is only good for occassional driving because it isn't a BMW.

You need to watch the prices very carefully. At times the DDR platform is more expensive than the RDRAM platform (I'm talking about the Dell Dimension computers). But most of the time (including today) the DDR at Dell is much cheaper. I need to help my school purchase about 50 computers and Dell is selling the DDR Dimension about $100 less than the RDRAM dimension. That is great, except I need the Optiplex and there isn't a DDR Optiplex. I'm so worried that they will be getting SDRAM to save that money. 🙁

Dell should have a DDR Optiplex.

However I disagree with this statement: "DDR and DDR II are going to be around longer than Rambus and the prices will flip again as Rambus systems age and DDR becomes the norm." There has been no evidence to support that at all. Rambus has been gaining market share of new computers, Rambus is set to have the fastest memory in May (lowest latency and greatest bandwidth). Rambus prices have consistantly and slowly fallen since the beginning of RDRAM. DDR prices have been going the other way for 6 months. Although DDR is gaining market share, it is at the expense of SDRAM and not at the expense of RDRAM. Who knows about the future, but for now, there is no sign of RDRAM leaving. Talk to me in 2 years and then I may very well agree with you (or you might be eating your words).
