Growing a beard... how high/low to shave the neckline??

I'm about three weeks in and I guess it's time to shape it. I just want to go for a standard full beard.

On the sides, it's easy enough to follow the jaw line, but I'm not sure about the midline. Many people seem to use the adam's apple as a landmark, but I can't seem to figure out if you're supposed to use the top or bottom.

If I use the bottom of the adam's apple as my landmark, I'll be shaving almost nothing off and just kinda cleaning up the edges.

If I use the top of the adam's apple, I'm taking a LOT of potential beard off, but maybe that's how much has to go to get a clean look.

Anyone have any ideas about proper shaping?

I shave about 1/2" above the top of the adam's apple. It ends up being about 3 inches of shaving on my neck.

And yes, that's how you achieve a clean look.

I've seen people with pubes-like beard growing down their neck, in the vertical part of the neck. That's just horrible.
From what I can feel my adam apple is just where the skin does the 90° angle from the neck and goes towards my chin.
I'd certainly shave to the top.

It depends on your beard and your face. Just start very low and slowly go higher until you like what you see. If you have clippers, use that to carve it out to get a good idea. Once you have settled into something you like go over it with the razor.

If you program in C or have a degree in math, you need to make sure that you do not shave the neck area at all. Very important.

As soon as that is shaven all the information is lost. 🙁
The only exception is in individuals not able to grow beards in which case it is proportional to amount of hair lost.

I shave just below the jaw and chin line a little bit. So you don't see a line but don't see it on the neck. But I'm not over weight with a chubby face, I have a defined edge and I end it under my chin. Whatever you do if you are fat faced don't shave a super sharp edge on your face to give the illusion you have a jaw line. That looks so horrible lol.

If you can't find the natural line where the underside of your jaw meets your neck, do not grow a beard.

Shave everything except the neck

x2.

But really, I can't quite image shaving to below your adams apple, unless you're some type of mutant. Just shave to below your jaw line as others have posted. If still in doubt, post pics so we can all mock and/or advise you.

I don't even have to think about the lower part of my face anymore, having had a chin-only goatee for like seven years. That becomes second nature pretty quick. The more difficult part is judging where you should shave the sides (obviously not an issue with a full beard) and also trimming up on your cheeks. If your beard grows wolf-man style, you gotta trim that shit. The hair is not supposed to come up to your eyes. 😀

The entire point of a beard is not having to shave at all.

Females would disagree with you here, well there are some who like homeless/mountain man type beards. But those females aren't exactly desirable.

I had a semi hobo beard until last week, I shaved and lined it up real tight. Females starting coming out the woodwork the following day.

If you have hair anywhere in your neck below maybe 1/2 an inch below your jaw you look homeless.

That's where you lost the game.

That's where you lost the game.

So are you saying I should try to attract males? If I was gay, I would have to be even more on point with my beard game. Outside of that fat one with glasses who use to always be on Hollywood Squares uh, Bruce Velanche(sp?) you don't see men with neckbeards.

I personally like pussy, and having a well kept beard's one of the key elements. So I'd say I'm winning the game *shrug*

When growing a beard I shave my neck. That's about it I guess, besides maybe some trimming here and there.
