Groups plan to boycott Sinclair Broadcasting

There is a difference:
Moore's film must be paid to watch. Thus only those who really want to see it will go out of their way to pay for it (at a theather or on pay-per-view).
Sinclair is not forcing anyone to watch the documentary. Only those who really want to see it will do so.

Sinclair is showing a film for free and on broadcast networks where regulations are in place in an attempt to give equal coverage to the major canidates
ABC, CBS, NBC, and even PBS have been giving kerry/edwards free coverage, even helping to defeat President Bush. Remember Rathergate?

So, where is the difference? And why are the democrats so afraid of people viewing the documentary?

For those of you whining about the dems boycotting Sinclair -- where were you when CBS was going to air "The Reagans" mini-series and conservative boycotts bounced it off the air before it was ever shown?

<alchemize style argument>

Oh I see, it's OK when conservative groups protest and boycott, but not when liberal groups or democrats boycott. It's all "Up with free speech!" and "Oh please, just let my innocent program be SEEN. By the PEOPLE. Oh please, stop harassing us..."

Interesting, a movie like Farenheit 9/11 comes out and Micheal Moore is a hero. Sinclair decides to air some bias against Kerry and there is a boycott. It's too bad really that they didn't decide to propogate this in another fashion besides free tv.
There is a difference:
[*]Moore's film must be paid to watch. Thus only those who really want to see it will go out of their way to pay for it (at a theather or on pay-per-view).
[*]Sinclair is showing a film for free and on broadcast networks where regulations are in place in an attempt to give equal coverage to the major canidates.

I personally think both should be played on broadcast networks. Let everyone see both sides. I haven't seen the anti-Kerry movie and would like the chance to see it. I have seen Moore's film and it is ~85% anti-war (which indirectly puts Bush in a bad light) not very much focused on anti-Bush. Is the film shown by Sinclair similar or is it really focussed on bashing Kerry?

I agree.
broadcast networks where regulations are in place in an attempt to give equal coverage to the major canidates.
This should be inforced.

CBS should air F9/11 🙂

I could sit here and come up with examples all day.

When I was working out at the gymn, the tube was tuned to the "View". The old hags on there were insinuating that Bush was wearing a wire during the debates because he's too dim to come up with his own responses. That was an in-kind transfer to Kerry.

Then let Bush explain the bulge under his jacket.

Caught a bit of SNL. There was a skit on the second debate, the one which most Americans thought was a tie. If you saw it, you'd get the distinct impression that Bush was at a loss for words the whole night and Kerry cleaned his clock. That was an in-kind transfer to Kerry.

Kerry did clean his clock, just not as bad as he did the first time, lol.

The only real story here is that Kerry is used to getting favorable treatment on the broadcast TV networks. He's scared sh|tless that large numbers of people might see this documentary and learn what is presumably the truth about him. So the DNC is pulling out all the stops, bringing in all their big lawyers from NY to litigate, litigate, litigate in the local courts, the federal courts, the FEC, the FCC, and every other acronymn you can think of to get this documentary off the air. What are they scared of? That people will learn the facts and make an educated decision on whom to vote for? And if the documentary is BS, then the American people will see through that. If they don't, then we obviously have bigger things to worry about them protecting the people from themselves.

Yadda, yadda, yadda. Then let them broadcast equal BS for each side. What are you scared of??

I dont see anything wrong with either boycott. However, I am waiting for you to say this has a chilling effect on free speech. Which you would no doubt be doing if it were the conservatives doing the boycott.

I'm flattered DM that you like my style of arguing so much. How'd you remember that was your quote?? 🙂

PS what charrison said...the chilling part 🙂

This is all about Sinclair abusing the public airwaves. Nobody's stopping people from putting out garbage-- it's done all the time on Fox. It's the political message without giving the opposite side an equal choice that's dirty and Republican. That's why this boycott is here.

get soros to buy the time.

As I've said time and time again, this whole thread is the left whining because they didn't think of it first. Trying to pretend that you're above this sort of thing is completely laughable, as I guarantee you would all have twelve different TVs in your house tuned in to watch F 9/11 if it came on. The indignation of hypocrites is comedy.

Neither this documentary, nor F 9/11, should be allowed on public TV. I doubt either of them meets any sort of formal definition for documentary, and it's a complete joke that such slander/libel/lies are allowed to be spread in any format, especially with the explicit reason of swinging voters one way or the other.

From my understanding Sinclair offered equal time to Kerry, but it was turned down.

What i find more disturbing is the quote from Chad Clanton, a spokesmen for Kerry:
"I think they are going to regret doing this, and they had better hope we don't win."

Right, it's true, these sort of boycotts do in fact chill free speech. It's one side attempting to suppress the other. No sir, I don't like it. I don't like it even more when it's an individual being punished for their political speech -- unlike this situation where it's a media conglomerate.

I think there's hypocrites on both sides of the aisle here. Again my question stands: Where were you when CBS's "Reagans" mini-series was boycotted off the air? Or are you guys for it/against it depending on which way the partisan wind blows? 😉

Twice in the same day I'm agreeing with DM? I feel dirty inside. 😛

Is Sinclair biased? Yes. Is what they're doing fair? No. Should people go running to the government? Of course not. Should people boycott Sinclair? If that's what they want to do.

I can see why this is happening... the big-media elite won't interview these people or talk about their positions. They have been virtually shut out (while anti-Bush people/positions get great coverage).

Sinclair should offer the Kerry people an hour after the documentary to comment/refute.

List of advertisers pulling out:

Carroll's Furniture, Arden, MN (Scott and Debra Rosenthal) via DailyKOS user dqw5644 and Miss Jean - "It is our intention to cease advertising with your affiliate unless actions are taken by the Sinclair Broadcast Group to establish and maintain fair and balanced viewpoints in programming." [25] (Contact: carfurnmn@aol.com)

Good's Furniture House support mail <support@goodsfurniture.com> via user Coach - Good morning, This morning we spoke with our sales representative at KGAN in Cedar Rapids and have decided that it would be best to pull our advertising with them. We value your patronage and would like to thank you for bringing this situation to our attention. Good's Furniture House.

JAMES SCOTT FARRIN SUSPENDS TV ADVERTISEMENTS ON SINCLAIR BROADCASTING

DURHAM, NC, October 13, 2004, 12:30 PM EST- The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin informed Sinclair Broadcasting Group affiliates, WLFL-TV (WB 22) and WRDC-TV (UPN 28) today that it was suspending all advertising indefinitely. The decision was prompted by Sinclair's announcement that it will air a blatantly political program: Carlton Sherwood's "Stolen Honor: Wounds that Never Heal." Federal Communications Commissioner Michael Copps called Sinclair's action "an abuse of the public trust." He added that "it is proof positive of media consolidation run amok when one owner can use the public airwaves to blanket the country with its political ideology -- whether liberal or conservative. Some will undoubtedly question if this is appropriate stewardship of the public airwaves."

The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin agrees with the 18 U.S. senators who have filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission protesting this broadcast. "As lawyers who protect the rights of injured people, we take any abuse of power or attack on the basic freedoms that we enjoy as citizens as a grave matter," said firm president James S. Farrin. "We can not stand idly by. I am encouraging other law firms and advertisers to join us in this stand."

Keller Williams Town & Country Realty, Tallahasee, FL. (Jason Shoaf) via DailyKOS user kos - "I am truly sorry that Sinclair Broadcasting Group has done this. I strive to excel in all that I do and hope that you will understand my shock when I learned that Sinclair has done this. I had no idea when I chose to advertise with the local NBC 40 that they would do this. I advertise in several ways with numerous companies, none of which struck me in a way to cause alarm. In light of this information, I will not be advertising with Sinclair any more. I called my advertising agent earlier this evening and they will be pulling my advertising effective immediately. To sum this up, I hope that you and your family will not hold the fact that I advertise so that I may obtain business to make a living in this world, something that I know you can understand. I keep politics out of my business and try to focus on providing the best quality real estate service in Tallahassee." [26] (Contact: jasonshoaf@kw.com)

Maine Hosting Solutions via DailyKOS user Fivesideagon"Unbeknownst to me, the company at which I work had advertising slots purchased on the Portland, ME Sinclair station. I fielded a call earlier where a guy introduced himself and said he was calling on behalf of an organization for Independent voters in Maine. He said that he had referred business to us in the past but could no longer do so in good faith. I think I surprised him with my awareness of what's going on, though I probably lost points by not knowing we advertise on WGME.

"Anyway, I made my case to the boss-types, pointing out that this would likely be the first of many protestation calls, and brought up points made here and on other weblogs. Well, one of them called our account rep. at WGME to cancel our advertising for the time being. If the showing doesn't go through, or equal time and effort are given to a piece that benefits Kerry, then we will talk to WGME about advertising with the station again." [27] ( http://www.mainehost.com/ )

Piranaco Northeast, Portland, Maine (Tom Caron) via DailyKOS user crackrabbit - "Dear Tom and all who have sent me an email on this subject. I am in complete agreement with you and will discontinue my relationship with Sinclair immediately... Yours, Tom Caron Piranaco Northeast" [28] (Contact: tcaron@piranaconortheast.com)

Sandy Sansing Automotive Group Pensacola, FL -- WEAR's #1 Advertiser! (Sheila Lohbeck) <slohbeck@sandysansing.com> via user iammattthomas - "Sandy Sansing Automotive Inc. has requested all advertising with WEAR TV3 be canceled until November 2."

SCORE Federal Credit Union Senior Executive Vice President "Tim Cook" <timcook@scorefcu.com> via user Coach - "Thank you for your concern regarding Sinclair Broadcast Group's decision to air the documentary entitled "Stolen Honor". We, as a federally chartered credit union, are here to serve all of our members regardless of political persuasion. Accordingly, the credit union industry has a long history of remaining neutral in regards to political issues. We have contacted WTWC today and informed them that we will be moving our television advertising to another television station if they decide to air the documentary."

Tyson Foods (Ed Nicholson) via DailyKOS user spjeffer - "The recent Tyson Foods advertising buy has included network buys on CBS, ABC,and Fox. It has not included any direct spot buys from the Sinclair Network, which is comprised of affiliate stations from these networks. Any Tyson advertising which might have run on Sinclair affiliates, would have been generated from the national networks from whom our buys have been made. In order for our company to discontinue our spots from running on Sinclair-owned stations, we would have to completely discontinue our network television advertising. Notwithstanding, our ad campaign is scheduled to be temporarily suspended after this Friday. The site http://www.boycottsbg.com/advertisers/default.aspx has been contacted, and has removed our company's name." [29]

Whibbs & Whibbs, P.A. (Michael Rayboun) via DailyKOS user davinic - "My firm is pulling all of our advertising dollars from your Pensacola ABC affiliate, WEAR. Your decisions in the past, the nightly rhetoric from Mark Hyman, and your recent decision which, we believe, is damaging to the democratic process itself, make it impossible for us to continue funding such reprehensible conduct." [30] and in a posting on WashingtonMonthly.com, "I couldn't agree more with your position and, as a firm, and as an individual partner here, we made the easy decision of pulling all of our advertising dollars from Sinclair. Their actions are unethical, dishonest, and damaging to our notions of democracy. Thanks for your support, and I'll be doing the same thing you are with the other advertisers." [31] (Contact: info@whibbsandwhibbs.com)

Paradigm Windows, Portland, Maine (Rich Robinv) via DailyKOS user jjokeefe - "Email from Rich Robinv at Paradigm: Please forward this e-mail to anyone you choose....We are as dismayed as you. This call was made when we received our first e-mail pertaining to this matter at 9:00 am. Yours Rich Robinov"[32]

HomesThatClick.com Columbus, Ohio - via DailyKOS user mjw - "This afternoon, we pulled our advertising off website, WSYX and WTTE in protest. Please remember Homes that Click when you are buying or selling a home and pass that on to your friends! 🙂... I have personally sent an email to Mark Hyman and suggest you do the same. We have withdrawn our advertising from the website." [33]

Guerin Associates Portland, Maine (Marianne S. Guerin) via DailyKOS user mainer - "I have voiced my objection to WGME. I too am a supporter of John Kerry and will pull my advertising should this anti-Kerry segment be aired on Channel 13. Sincerely, Marianne S. Guerin" [34]

Hannaford's Portland, Maine Lamgal reports: "1-800-213-9040, consumerinfo@hannaford.com, "Just got a call from Wendy in Customer Service, Hannaford's is pulling out until further notice." DailyKOS user crackrabbit reports this response via email: "On October 13, 2004 we contacted the Sinclair Broadcasting Group and WGME to discuss our concerns with their decision to broadcast the documentary titled, "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal."
