Group projects: The 80/20 rule...

I'm an undergrad and this semester I've had to do a 6-person group project for a Data Comm class...basically we 4 out of the 6 did all the work with the other 2 not responding to any group emails, saying nothing to us in class, and overall not making any effort...the project is due tomorrow so one of the 2 slackers emails us all for the first time:

hey guys is everything set for the presentation?
we should meet before then just o make sure everyone knows what is happening
email me back and let me know

One of our pissed off group members writes in reply to all group members:

Everything is set for the project. The power point presentation looks good and the reports is neatly in a binder. I want to know if you really think that you are going to stand up and present with us after not even putting in a minute of your time. You are more then welcomed to stand up there, but there are only 4 names that are going on the project. You had all semester to even offer to help out and you never bothered. You email the group the night before it is due and ask if everything is ready. There is no way that you are going to take credit for all the work that Jen, Tim, Guy and I did. We spent more then 3 hours on it tonight alone, almost 50 page report and you never even asked what you could contribute. The project could have been a lot easier for us if we had 2 more people helping. The two of you can speak before the rest of us and explain what you contributed, what the company is, and how it operates. If you want feel free to contact me.

I guess this is just a rant about lazy group members!!!
The 80/20 rule states that 80% of the work gets done by 20% of the people

how true, good job standing up to those slackers though 😉

we actually want them to explain in front of the class tomorrow why there will only be 4 names on the presentation instead of the full 6

I hate people like that...but did you guys attempt to include them? Were they aware of the ongoings and times to come? Did they receive all the e-mail/messageing that went on? If so then I'm totally with you that they sohuld get a zero.

well.... technically 4 out of 6 is 66%
😛

Shouldn't have engaged in a rebuttal if you ask me.
Would have been easier to just tell him to meet you guys at the actual presentation
Just because he's been lazy, doesn't mean you should be mean.

But i understand. We've all been in projects like these.

we not only notified them in class but also got a mass email list the 1st day of class...1 guy hasnt said a word and the other guy claims all the mass emails were "filtered into his junk mail folder" - our point is that he never made an attempt to contact us in class

yea i hate it when that happens. the flip side though, is sometimes the person is so incompetant, you'd rather do the stuff yourself because it would be less work than having to fix every mistake they make.

actually, if these guys dont know what they're talking about, the whole group gets penalized...i think that's grounds for being mean

Stuff that. People are not doing stuff like that to me.

That guys not only been lazy but a total a-hole. He used his time to do whatever and did not contribute to the team effort of the group. Slackers piss me off.

The 80/20 rule states that 80% of the work gets done by 20% of the people

And in return for their contribution, those 20% of the people, get to pay about 80% of the taxes, aint it sweet. 🙂

I always thought that the 80/20 rule stated that 80% of network traffic stays local on the internal network, and 20% goes over the WAN.

Props to your group member for having the balls to say that. I had 3 group projects this semester - I can safely say I put in more time on all of them except for one.

The reason he said that was in response to the slacker's email- HE had the balls to send everyone the email the night before...

anyways i'll update this tomorrow night to let ya guys know how the presentation goes...

Thank god for weed-out classes. People like that didn't survive past the 3rd semester in Engineering. I had many more good groups than bad in my junior and senior year. I don't know if this holds true for all the other majors though, since the engineering department essentially weeded these people out to your departments. 😛

Hahaha, good response on the part of your group-mate. I hope the losers fail. 🙂

But, shouldn't it be the 100/66 rule?

hahaha thats freaking hilarious. I'm usually one of the slackers but i don't think i've ever not contributed, hope you hold your ground and not give em credit
