Group chat programs?

Anyone know of any programs that are designed for offices that'll allow us to easily send group messages chat room style? The main thing is caveat is that there'd be a pop-up notification system, similar to how Outlook does it, so that we don't have to click on the window every time a new one pops up.

My lab uses openfire as an XMPP server with pidgin for clients. I can broadcast a message to all (or some) users using broadcast accounts...but their replies go only to me (or whoever sent the broadcast).

I can also setup persistent chatrooms, but I haven't looked into whether one can be "subscribed" to it and receive notifications.

edit: It does look like pidgin can persistently join to a chatroom (and stay logged in after the chat window is close), but I haven't found a way to make any popup notifications of when new messages are made. The room title just gets bolded in the buddies list.

edit2: the guifications plugin for pidgin does allow for a popup notification of new messages in the chatroom.
