I know this is cases and cooling but my problem has to do with a case.

I'm installing a motherboard, asus k7v, just a basic slot a motherboard. I installed it, screwed it in, hooked power supply up, gave power and it turned on instantly. So I took it outside the case and it did not start up instantly. I thought it was a grounding problem so all the standoffs have electrical tape on them. I install motherboard again and it still does the same thing. I cover the IO backplate with electrical tape and make cutouts for the ports, still does it. I can set the motherboard in the case and hook it up without haveing it in the backplate and it works fine. I can put it in the backplate, give it power, and it starts up and as soon as I pull it away from the backplate it turns off.

I guess I could just run it without a backplate and it would work. Anyone have any ideas? I could post pics if anyone would like to see too.

Edit: I don't want it starting as soon as there is power available. When it does start like its not supposed to, nothing is displayed on the screen either.

I was putting a new mobo into a case on Friday and I had EVERYTHING assembled, and then I got ready to plug stuff into the I/O panel and what do I see? The springy finger thing that's supposed to sit on top of the mobo's NIC-port block was inside the NIC port.

:disgust: ~ *grumble, :wine:, grumble* stupid I/O shield! :p

So maybe take a close look and make sure that none of those contact spring things are getting into the USB jacks. If that isn't the issue, then  <--- me too

Definitely not the standoffs. they dont need to be insulated unless you have them in the wrong place. check to be sure you have one and only one standoff per mobo hole.

Yup, they are all correct.

Does it do that even when the case's Power button is not plugged into the motherboard header?

Does it have a jumper with Keyboard on? or have you tried it without the PS ports plugged in?

I have not hooked up the power button to the motherboard at all.

Not sure on the jumper but I have tried it without mouse/keyboard plugged in and it does not seem to make a difference. Right now I just don't have the backplate installed and it works fine.
