It won't kill you but, I guarantee it will taste like crap. Freezerburn FTL.

EDIT: Man, I'm an idiot, I was thinking June 2001, not June 1st.

Thats exactly what i was thinking.

Jesus fscking christ. We have at least one of these threads a month.

OK folks. Listen.

The date on store packaging means, well, nothing. It is simply the date that the product should be sold by. It does not magically spoil on that date.

If it smells fine, it is OK to eat. Period.

If it is bad, you will know it the instant your nose gets anywhere near it.

I agree.

For me, the date is simply a rough guide. If it smells ok and looks ok, I am going to eat it (for the most part).

I hate wasting good food just because of a date.

Edit: For the record, I read it as the 1st of June because I thought that no one would be dumb enough to use meat that had been in their freezer for 5 years.

June 1st? The meat is fine. June 2001? I wouldn't eat it for a million dollars.

Ditto'ed.

If the label says june 1, 2006, then I would give it a month before I care what the label says.

Even once it starts to get discolored it's still okay for a few weeks.

In the old west they did not have refridgeration and they would often eat meat that was several weeks old. In order to combat the bad flavor they would often drown the meat in sauce. That is were Barbecue sauce originated. The date on the package is a sell by date, the store wants to sell it by that date in order to keep the inventory moving. In other words if you cook it to a core temperature of 170°F, then you should be fine.

The expiration date is just there to cover the store/manafacturer in case somebody actually lets it go bad and then eats it. If it's been frozen, you'll be fine.

Even June 2001 would be fine if it was frozen all that time.

if beef is good frozen for 5 years why does everything say to eat it within 12 months?

If it doesnt smell and still looks ok its ok to eat it. It is not like the meat has a calander and immidately turns bad just because it hit the date the packager stuck on there...
