Okay, I know I'm late to the party, but since there were no threads on this . . .

I just watched Grizzly Man. It's an interesting movie, but it, like the life of Timothy Treadwell, seems a little pointless. He strikes me as more or less a complete fool, and it's surprising he lasted as long as he did. It's a strange film in that the filmmaker, Werner Herzog, seems to have reached the conclusion that Treadwell was a dope who died for no good reason, and did as much harm as good to the bears he loved.

I will say it's interesting to me that he was able to spend 13 summers with the bears without incident, but I certainly don't take that as signifying that they liked or cared about him.

Yeah, his video camera was recording for some reason, with the lens cap on, when they were killed. Herzog listens to the tape at one point during the film, then encourages the woman who owns it (Treadwell's former girlfriend) to destroy it.

"dear lets go in the woods and play with the Bears! they love me!"

incorrect response was givin "ok dear! that sounds fun! i love you!"

correct response that should have been givin: "uhh dear go play with the bears? you mean the chicago bears right? no? real bears? yeah..ok fvck you. you go get eaten i will wait here for you"

What's odd is they had already left for the season. They encountered some kind of problem at the airport and Treadwell got pissed and decided to return for a few more weeks. Apparently she had threatened to leave him the day before they died, which was also the day they were to be picked up.

how so .....as someone mentioned if he truly had gone 13 summers without incident then she probably believed that he knew a lot about bears...he was some kind of bear whisperer or soemthing

maybe she shouldnt have believed him but she was in love probably and he convinced her that he knew what he was doing...13 summers is a long ass time

I know this thread is long dead, but I am up early writing a critique on this film for a class, and I just have to vent a little about this. Forgetting about the downright shoddy filmaking of the director Warner Herzog I have a few things to say about the subject of the film. Coming from someone who grew up in clsoe proximity to wild bears, I can tell you one thing for cetrain: Treadwell was batshit insane. He treated those bears almost like pets, and ignored numerous classic warning signs of bear agitation. The reason he made it 13 summers is rather simple, the bears Treadwell was dealing with were costal brown bears, and not in fact "grizzlies". Grizzly bears are smaller and much more agressive bround bears found inland, mainly in the pacific northwest. Grizzlies would have eaten this guy long ago. However, the larger costal brown bears of Alaska are far less terratorial, and have far less competition for food. They tolerate the presence of other bears, and consquently in my mind, the presence of Treadwell and his antics. Treadwell returned after an aborted attempt to return home at a time when the salmon run was over, food was scare, and older bears were desperate to find food before hibernation. This is exactly the type of bear the ultimatly killed him and his girlfriend. Despite my negative feelings twoards Treadwell (ultimatly he did more harm than good to the bears) I cannot help but feel remorse for anyone eaten alive by a bear, and I feel especially bad in regards to his girlfriend. Ok, I feel better now, I just had to say that somewhere.

The guy who narrates the movie is terrible.

He sounds like a creep.

Also, after seeing that, I've changed my vocabulary.

Friend : "It's friday night ar you going out?"

Me : "Does Timothy Treadwell ****** in the woods?"

Herzog is without question the crappiest German director ever. Yes, this inculdes Uwe Boll, who may or may not be from Germany. I think since Treadwel is no longer shitting in the woods, perhaps we should say "Do bears ****** Timothy Treadwell?" However that seems just a tad insensative....

haha

yea that guy is awful.

The best part of the movie is when he breaks down about the bee dieing in the flower etc.

Then the bee flies away.

That and him taking multiple shots of navigating the trails.

Or when that fox steals his hat.

Well that and when he's all about that bears poop.

Man now that I think back, this movie might be a classic.

I actually felt conflicted about even bringing this thread back, because i'm not sure if I really want people seeing this movie. Its both hilarious and disturbing, but the real problem is, the more people see it the more the liklihood we see copycat idiots.

I loved the bee part by the way. It encapsulates how little this guy really knew about wildlife.

Yea I agree, and his polar personality.

Man that guy was really about extremes. The worst part was it seems as if he went out into the field with very little actual knowledge about the area and / or the wildlife and just survived in the rawest sense of the word.

The movie was shoddy and uncormfortable, which did a great job of portraying how really fvcked up this guys life was. I mean you can't even watch a movie on the guy without feeling like you want to hang out with some bears until they take you out of his disgusting world.

The guy was operating on raw emotions which eventually led to him being an afternoon snack.

Its questionable how much real wilderness survival was going on. Seems to me he had his food and supplies flown in, and was really just on an extended camping trip.
