In a world where every person can inherently use magic sure. But in most fantasy settings, magic is either something you have to be born with the ability to use or study for a long period of time. For those that don't fit either of those criteria, a gun would be of some use.

what game worlds would those be? NWN/D&D game worlds, every single player in the game has at least a few 'Spell like abilities'. The TES games, you can pick up magic and spells at any corner drug store. Two Worlds is the same. the Witcher. same. KoA:R, the same. And anyone who is anyone can cast them. diablo, every class has some type of Magic ability. Even Titan Quest, everyone had abilities that were magical in nature.

and even if it is more rare than that, you still have the same problem. it is messy and dangerous to use and anyone with magic is going to be MUCH more dangerous than you. Plus, in most worlds, it is the really smart people who do all of the research and invention. You know, the ones who use magic? So why would they research something that mirrors something they can already do, but can be done by their non magic using enemies?

it would be like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Only a knife that could just as easily kill YOU as your opponent.

and one final thing. The really early flintlocks were single shot and then 5 minutes to reload. No rapid fire, no autofire. No 'Clips' of amo. Not to mention that accuracy was abysmal even at close range.

What a last 10 minutes. GD was $7K short of the last stretch goal, then WHAM! it jumped to $535K to hit the last stretch goal with 9 minutes left to go. GD did more in the last day than the first. It was awesome watching the pledges increase hundreds of dollars a minute. This game is going to rock!

Are you kidding? Diablo III is trash. total failure. Have you even played it?

Trash is debatable. Its not a total failure. Millions of people are playing it (when they can).
In fact that says something right there. The fact it goes down during single player mode but tons of people will still keep grinding away is a testament to its popularity.

I wont buy it, cuz I'm a hardass like that. But I'm probably in the minority.

I think the guy on QFT said it best when he said that Blizzard tends more towards making obsession games rather than fun games. Playing Diablo 2 was definitely more about the obsession of getting to that next level or beating that next boss battle or finding that next powerful item than actual FUN. Diablo 3 seems to be exactly the same thing. People obsess about it and so they play. If anything, the server going down only feeds the frenzy.

When is there going to be a beta for this? I bought in as Legendary like a year ago then donated another $53 or whatever to get to the $100 Kickstarter level. Do i get anything the stuff in the below tiers like the swashbuckler stuff and what not they added?

Yes you get all the benefits of the tiers below.

I wouldn't expect a beta for a good 6-8 months, at least.

saying anything absolute is silly.. game slike music, food and movies is a differnt taste for us all. Amazing its so carp, yet not a single reason why? Of course you are entilted to dislike.. Presonally was very unimpressed by the alpha and beta and almost didnt buy the game. But my friends where all playing and ured me to join. After the dull rist 10 levels its picked up and I ma quite enjoying it.. again, just my feeling.

reasons to like:companions are actually worthwhile this time.. redundant fun sapping things have been removed (identify, town portal scrolls.. unless you where utter shit at playing and couldnt keep some coin they where just a pure and simple cash sink) The treasure hunt part is still intact, but being able to craft some OK equipment when a class specific piece will not drop is nice.. its just filler armour (crafted).. but when my gloves are level 10 drops and teh random dice roll has served my up no gloves fro 20 levels.. its nice to fill that gap. Quest are all voiced, adds a tiny bit... its not game changeing but nice. They have changed combat from POT spams to cool downs and ability management.. not a huge change. but no more fill pockets with pots for a tough battle.. you actually have to live and not spam pots.

Dislikes: play knightmare with Permadeath.. get a lag spike fighting a boss when 3 random rares appear, with an add of one of those "throw many tiny mob battles" ( it happens alot)
you come back dead.. this alwasy on thing is ok for co-op where people can porect you, but no more solo hardcore if your net connect isnt perfect.. that SUCKS!

As for GrimDawn.. cant wait.. only Kickstarter I supported.. very pumped..

Good luck to them. TQ would have been acceptable if I hadn't already played diablo 2. It felt too generic in comparison.

But fire arms and the like are not filling a need in a world with magic. Why would anyone mess around with something as messy and unreliable, not to mention dangerous as black powder, if you can chant a few words and shoot a missile unerringly into your target. why create a drum of powder that might explode and blow you to kingdom come, if you can cast a spell that is 100% safe for you, but really dangerous to your enemies.

Ease and cost.

English longbowmen were far more accurate, had better range, and a much better kill rate than any early firearms. But training to use a longbow required years and years, they would start training as a child and 10 years later possible be a useful soldier. On the other hand, peasants could be trained to fire a musket in a matter of months.

It's not really hard for me to beleive that the situation in a fantasy would might be the same in relation to magic and firearms. Magic might be superior, safer, better in every way- but if it takes more time and effort to use, firearms will have a niche.

^ that's also why crossbows became popular despite the lower rate of fire.

In many fantasy worlds including the Star Wars universe, only some people are born with the ability to do magic.

Depending on the world, magical ability might also be needed to use at least some magic weapons. Joe the Barbarian might be able to use an enchanted sword but not a wand of death ray.

In a world where magic is scarce, I might buy that. In the gaming worlds that we deal with today, even the village idiot can crap out magic. It's as common and easy to come by as donkey dung.

Waaaaaaayyy overthinking something that is supposed to be much more along the lines of mindless (mostly, anyway) entertainment.

Is it way over-thinking it that I don't want guns in my fantasy/ Swords and sorcery world?

Ok, simpler rational. It simply isn't necessary within the context of the game world. If you want guns, go play GTA or Red Dead Redemption or Halo. Otherwise, let's have ray guns, because we all know that Aliens helped the Egyptians build the pyramids.

I understand where you are coming from, as I think guns don't really go with magic either. Am I wrong that guns are probably going to be utilized mostly by a single class type, and not integrated in all the classes? You could just choose not to play the gun-using classes.

Yeah, I get that. And I am prepared to enjoy Grim Dawn for what it is. I was just expecting more of a classic Swords and Sorcery setting rather than a Steampunk setting. Both are good and valid genres, and I have enjoyed games from both. Generally, Steampunk is less Knights and ladies and more Victorian muskets and ornothopters. Which just means that this is less "Standard" medium.

Either way, it only means that I am less likely to put down money until I see the game in action. If it had been a straight sequel to Titan Quest (ancient Greek Gods and titans), I would have put my money down already. Now I am more 'Wait and see'.
