my friend gets angry over 2 dollar tips and $10 donations and if I do that, he calls me stupid and says why dont you just donate 1 dollar dummy. Is that being greedy? or being smart for saving money? :frown: he just started this crap over again when I gave a 3 dollar tip to a barber and since it was his money he started all these arguments.. and it's freaking annoying.

I don't agree with the concept of calculating tip based on the price of service/merchandise purchased, but I just do it, because soceity says so.
It is no more difficult to serve five people at a table with $5.99 meal than it is to serve each of them $15.99 New York steak meal.
Why should the server doing the first example get paid $4.50 in tip when the server doing the second example get paid $12.00 in tip when it is basically the same amount of work?
I can sort of relate this to Marxism where wages of employee should be proportional to the profit of selling the goods they produced.

D.A.R.E is worthless and evil. If D.A.R.E was on fire and went around asking people to put it out I wouldn't even pee on it. Personally I think the whole situation of tipping is stupid and whoever started it should be shot, but like it or not that's how businesses work now, and not tipping is greedy and selfish.
On tips, just give them what you think they deserve. I hate how sometimes people are obligated to pay 15% at restaurants that give them terrible service. If your barber did a great job, $2-3 is justified but normally I don't think people tip more than a dollar for a haircut that costs only $10.
buffet is usually 5-10%, since the waiter/ress isn't doing much, plus, use your judgement.
i.e. you and 10 friends are at a table for three hours, ordering round after round of food, wine, spirits, and having a good time. any time I'm in that situation (hah...) I'd tip at least 20-30%.
fast food usually people don't tip, if the owner of the establishment personally serves you, do not tip (i.e. if Big John of Big John's BBQ Rib Shack makes your ribs himself, no tips. its viewed as rude in that case [can you say "bribe"?]).
5% for bellboys, 10% for room service, a buck or so for an elevator operator, and so on.
I hate etiquette.
speaking of which, the french invented "etiquiette"... once, some time ago, a french nobleman had guests. to avoid confusion, he had basic rules for conduct written on tickets (e tiquette) and given to the dinner guests . sonofagun. grumblegrumble
