Kevin Mitchell playing left field for the Giants catching a hard hit fly ball barehanded then running into and through the door in the left field fence.

Jose Canseco playing Right Filed for the texas Rangers having a Flyball bounce of his head and over the right field fence for a header assisted homerun:)

<< Also, Kirk Gibson's pinch homer in the World Series also comes to mind... >>

Being an A's fan., especially a Dennis Ercersly Fan, that was one of the most disheartening plays in sports ever. In the same Series Jose Canseco hit a Grand Slam where the ball was hit so hard that it left a dent in the Camera it hit out in the Left Center Bleachers.

<< For a die-hard Packer fan (what other kind is there?), it has to be Bart Star's quarterback sneak to beat the Cowboys in the "ice bowl"! :D >>

Another Packer Fan with his nose in the past :)

I'll take the 3 superbowl wins and 5 knockouts of the Packers in the playoffs in the 90s any day :D

I'd have to say the greatest I remember was Christian Slater (think thats his name) last second shot for Duke in the NCAA Championship game.

If Jerry Jones wasn't such a Moron the "Boys would have won more than 3 Superbowls. The last Niner Superbowl was achieved by Boneheaded calls by Switzer in the NFC Championship Game agianst the Niners.

Man I miss that era of the NFL when there were actually Great teams like the "Boys", Packers and the Niners, unlike the mediocre Championship teams like the Pats and the Ravens.

Jeeze Tex, I would have sworn you were going to say Clark's Catch in the Back of the End zone from Joe Montana against the "Boys" in the NFC Championship game:)

And if Dion Sanders had been called for the flaterant pass interference on the 49ers 15 yeard line, the Cowboys would have scored another touchdown and won the game going for the 3rd superbowl.

Jerry Jones is an idiot for what he did with Johnson. I was on the radio at the time he did it and believe me we all said the same thing.

And I agree, the big three are missed :(

Just ask the sponsors of the last few Superbowls.

You mean where Montana threw a hail mary pass and got lucky? No :)

Montana made a career out of plays like that. I think the greatest Superbowl was the Niners/ Bengals 2 second SB meeting where Montana drove the Niners down the field with seconds left for the final winning touchdown. He truly was "Joe Cool"

9-20-1992 - Mickey Morandini is playing 2B for the Phillies. A line drive is hit to him. He catches the ball, steps on second base and tags the runner coming from first base....

Un-assisted triple play!

==

1998 World Cup England vs. Argentina - 18 year old Michael Owen comes into the game with 10 minutes left and in less than a minute has dribbled the ball 80 yards down field, beating half the Argentinian team and blasting a shot into the back of the net to tie the game.

==

1955 World Series - Yankees vs. Dodgers - In the fifth inning, Mickle Mantle makes a diving catch of a Gil Hodges line drive. Don Larsen goes on to pitch a 7 strikeout 97 pitch World Series No-Hitter

==

July 31, 2001 - Jake Paine swung his Snoopy driver and watched his golf ball soar 40 yards in the air, roll 25 feet and drop into the sixth hole at Lake Forest Golf and Practice Course for a hole-in-one. Jake is 3 years old :Q

I could go on all day...

Worst-Chris Webber in '93 9I think)

Oddest-Johnson kills bird (could be an interesting headline still)

Best-McGwire's 61st home run (even though he no longer holds the record he was still the guy who broke the 40 some year old record by Maris

Hmmm....many good ones.

The Immaculate Reception I grew up a rabid Steelers fan, so I had to put this one first.:)

Kirk Gibson's homer already mentioned.

The other "Shot Heard Round the World" was the double eagle recorded by Gene Sarazen in the 1935 Masters. This tied Craig Wood and forced a 36-hole playoff, which Sarazen won.

Greg Lemond overcomes what is widely considered an insurmountable deficit of 50 seconds in the final, individual time trial stage of the 1989 Tour de France to win by 8 seconds. His average speed (still a record for a time trial of this distance): 54.545 kph.

1975 World Series: Game Six.

Pudge 'willing' the ball to stay fair and over the monster.

I think it's Christian Laettner.

As for the greatest play, I think it's a tie between the Kirk Gibson homer and the Lakers comeback in the 2000 Western Conference finals. :)

In 1997 there was a single month in which neither Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden or Mike Tyson were arrested or violated parole. That's a feat that'll never get topped.

I think that "The Play" has to be the best ending to any sporting event, ever. How could it possibly be topped? Certainly the most improbable ending.

In terms of the event where I was the most tense while watching it, I'd have to say the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. Red Sox up 5-3, one out away from winning the World Series for the first time in 68 years... then the Mets score three runs, the last of which scoring on the grounder that went through Buckner's legs. Unbelievable. I have the game on tape, and even before it happens, one gets the feeling that it was bound to happen.

Incidentally, Tex, "Slater" was Laettner's name on the SNES game NCAA Basketball. So maybe you saw it there. :)

<<NC State / Villanova --> National Basketball Championship game?>>

Actually, that was NC State vs. Houston in the 1983 NCAA championship game.

Derrick Whittenburg threw up a desperation 35 footer that was just short, and it was grabbed by Lorenzo Charles and dunked in over Akeem Olajuwan as time expired. State 54 Houston 52

That has my vote.

John Stocktons buzzer 3-pointer that sent the Jazz to the NBA finals a few years ago. Brought a tear to my eye. (of course, 4 games later they were beat by the Bulls, but at least they got there.)

Alan Amece scoring in OT to win "The greatest game ever played"

Here comes the Baltimore sports bias though:
Dilfer to Stokely, super bowl 35
Dilfer to Johnson, Last minute win at Tennessee
Banks to Sharpe, Jacksonville
Maryland's national championship win.
