What do you think is the greatest single sports play / moment in history?

The Catch?

The Shot Heard Round the World?

NC State / Villanova --> National Basketball Championship game?

Doug Flutie's Hail Mary?

??????

Can't think of one... but for the worst? Maybe when Steve Smith scored on his own net when he played for the Oilers (I think it was) ... poor guy.. he was crushed..

too many... and u can't really judge one on greatness. Everyone will have their own opinion but there are too many memorable and great plays in sports to pick just one. How bout Cal's lateral kickoff touchdown play with the Stanford crowd running onto the field? Living int he bay area I get conversations about that more then a lot of other plays. Jose Canseco's ball bouncing off head into stands was hilarious, as was Randy Johnson hitting the bird (not saying killing birds is funny, but u have to admit it was very humorous :)). Jordan missing a simple dunk was something I thought I'd never see. I think the "shot heard round the world' is overrated because it's now basically a fact that the giants stole signs every game to make that miraculous comeback in the standings, highlighted by Thompson's shot heard round the world. I know it's a strategy but it's a dirty one. Too many great memorable plays to name... heh

Too many to pick just one. One that pops into mind is Reggie Jackson. Game 6 of '77 World Series. 3 pitches and 3 homeruns. Most of you are too young to have witnessed it but it was the most awesome thing to watch.

*Edit - I never understood the fascination with The Catch. Sure it was a game winning catch, but it was far from a spectacular one.

Is it supposed to be international or just limited to US?
I doubt any of the things you listed are known outside the US.

it is very subjective imo. for me, it was in 1995, during the one game playoff with the angels. langston was pitcher.. bases loaded, and luis sojo hits an in-the-ballpark grand slam (aided by langston's error). unfrickin' believable.

For a die-hard Packer fan (what other kind is there?), it has to be Bart Star's quarterback sneak to beat the Cowboys in the "ice bowl"! :D

i would say The Catch

but the greatest one in recent memory though would have to be that game 6 Utah vs Bulls game with Jordan's "final" shot. The ball going swish and his arm just raised there was just priceless. (don't mind the push off on Bryon Russell's leg)

I had just turned 11 in 1993 when I was watching the Bulls/Suns game when the ball went Scottie Pippen passed low to Horace Grant and Horace kicked it out to John Paxton to hit the game-winning and championship-winning three. :D:D

Maybe it's just that I was still just a little guy but there was something magical about that moment in time. I remember it being one of the few times in my childhood that I was really close to my dad watching a game that in which we were both emotionally invested.

Yah... the only "shot heard round the world" that I know of is the one that started WWI.
