For me it was Doom/Doom2. The game was simply incredible when it came out - there was nothing like it. The graphics, atmosphere, and mayhem were amazing.

Everyone hates to hear it, but Counterstrike.

Other than that, I think I had a lot of fun and a lot of moments of awe playing Homeworld.

Stop reading my thoughts.

Ultima Online (the original, before Publish 16 or whatever it was)

When I read "social aspect, addictive, and clan aka guild" associated with CS I laughed. Ultima online easy trumps any game in all those aspects. If you never played you could never know

For me it would be a toss-up between Far Cry and Half Life, or Half Life 2 if you want to risk the Steam Authentication/offline problem many are experiencing.

Some good memories brought back here... sierra's thexder and shilpheed(or something like that)

But, best games of all time?
System shock 1 was probably one of the best games I ever played. Period. Sent shivers up and down my spine. 2 was ok, but had nothing on 1. I remember towards the end in 2 where you played part of the original level from 1, I thought that was really neat!

I think the original Dune set the stage for all RTS's to come, but boy, did i ever hate selecting all my units individually and moving them 1 by one to advance my armies!

Homeworld was another good one. Loved that game, Cataclysm was fun too, but there was a gap in progression of units (very few middle class ships)

Best story was probably star control 2. That sucker was deeeeeeep! The ur-quan storyline was compelling as hell!

Everquest, Front Page Sports Football on Dos, EQ2, Civilization i,ii,iii, Sim City

have been my fave's.

FPS's make my head hurt and non-mmo hack and slash has never challenged me.

I think the original Deus Ex has demonstrated the best combined design of any game released to date. Everything in that game was done correctly, aside from a couple of out of place sounds and a few quirky animations. The story, the weapons, the gameplay, the variety, the level design, the atmosphere, was all slam-on. However, that is not to say I think it is the best game for pure fun. I simply think it is the best made game to date.

Brilliant analysis. The game is perfect in many ways and only needs minor fixes in a few places. Nothing that affects gameplay. It was playble by hard-core FPS freaks and fun for RPG lovers.
Its only flaw was not enough custom user levels and a sequel that built up fanboys and left us crying like little girls with skinned knees.

I respect the love many folks have for Starcraft. It probably had the most useful editor ever to be distributed with a game. The stuff you could do in there was amazing. A person could practically make a whole new game if they wanted. But it was still just an overhead view RTS and eventually I got sick of playing.

EDIT: I saw many other folks put up the Baldurs Gate Series. I love them too. But I dont think they could be considered the GREATEST PC game because the folks who hate true RPG's found them very inaccessable. That limits overall love.
BTW: Diablo is NOT an RPG. Its an action game with stats. Elderscrolls and Might & Magic are RPG's. BG and Ultima are RPG's. DeusEx is an FPS cleverly derived from classic RPG.
Both Diablo games were improperly branded by folks who have no idea what role-playing means.

I liked the Xwing Series.

This would include Xwing and all the associated expansions, Tie Fighter and all the expansions, Xwing vs. Tie Fighter and all the expansions, and Xwing Alliance.
