Chase Utley.

EDIT: Thought we were talking MLB only. Of any sport, it'd probably have to be Tiger. He's the only "once in a generation" player on that list.

lol wat about lebron, federer, phelps and lance?

Lebron isn't the best player in his own league.
Federer has tight competition.
Armstrong no longer competes at a meaningful level.
Phelps isn't a professional in his sport.

Current player was the stipulation, right? Guys who were or could become the best don't get the nod.

Tiger Woods is the best, and hasn't relinquished that crown for many, many years now. The only one who comes close currently is Phelps. Both are definitely the best at their sport, but Tiger takes it because he's been the best for much longer.

Arguing who is the most dominant at their respective sport.

You are correct, current player was the stipulation. As much I would love to put the all time athletes, I feel like baseball would be so incredibly hard to choose 1 or 2 (I'm sure others are hard as well - but baseball seems to have soooo many)

Wow, talk about a fail poll. NBA Lebron but don't list Kobe? NHL Crosby but don't list Malkin or Ovechkin? Tennis you have Federer but no Nadal? Why include the #2 in each sport while leaving out the #1.

If you had read ANYTHING you would see that I limited it to 1 per sport! If I were to go to 2, people would ask 3, if I were to go to 3 people would ask 4. So I just stayed at 1.

#2 is a subjective analysis on your part - and as I said there are a large group who believe they are the best at their current sport. That is why I said ARGUABLY the best.

By that definition, I'd have to vote for Phelps. Dude went undefeated in the Olympics and took down 8 golds. Everybody else on that list, while dominant, have peers near their equal or have taken their fair share of loses.

my list would be

1. Roger Federer
2. Lance Armstrong
3. Tiger Woods
3. Michael Phelps
4. Tom Brady
5. Lebron James
6. Albert Pujols
7. Sidney Crosby

if Nadal didn't rise up to take on Federer, Federer would be easily the best tennis player ever instead of one of the best ever

although with that logic, I guess Armstrong should be #1 on my list since he probably is the best long distance cyclist ever (not very familiar with the sport though)

I know.... I tried to find someone else, but 4 Superbowl Rings and the best QB made it hard. I wanted to put LT there, but he had quite an off year last year. If you have any suggestions instead I'm open to hearing them.

Ya know I am biased as Albert Pujols is my favorite player in anything - but he just hit another Grand Slam to put the Cardinals on top 4-3 in the 8th inning. I don't know that anyone in MLB can hold a candle to this guy.

I don't like comparing individual sport athletes against team sport athletes.

So I'll take Tiger by a landslide, and for a team sport athlete, man thats tough. I'm not even sure what sport to go to.

Well, I choose Kane Waselenchuk. Yeah, yeah, Kane who? I know.

Racquetball baby! He came back this season and only lost 1 match and to place himself as the number 1 player. Not only did he only loose 1 match, very few went to five games (best of 5 in the IRT) because he just completely dominated most of the other players.

He's so amazingly talented with every aspect of the game. He's got plenty of power, a good service of both lobs and drive serves, fast, quick hands and great swing mechanics.

I don't follow sports, but I recently saw an interview with LeBron James. That guy's pretty impressive, and has my vote for greatest player.

I guess you should check your facts before nominating people.
