Out of these choices, each of these players are the best (arguably in some cases) at their sport. Who is the best current player (I apologize, I don't know soccer players that well)?

-Kevin

Edit: By current, I merely mean that they are still playing. Given their resume who is the best right now.

Edit 2: I kept this to 1 player per sport. I'm not listing 5 different players for each sport...

I'm going to have to go with "Other" on this one, although LeBron is quite an impressive specimen, hmmm...

I'm not putting every single argument on the list. LeBron got the MVP this year, I went with him.

Adding Michael Phelps.

By what measure? Only Roger Federer and maybe Tiger Woods on that list could reasonably called the greatest ever in their sport. But that doesn't really mean they are the "greatest current athletes."

Well current as in they are still playing - thats the only thing I mean by that.

If there is 1 player who many would argue is the best at the MMA, I will happily add him... but I didn't know of 1 who fits that description.

Bolt (sprinter), Messi ("soccer"), Bekele (long distance runner) should be in the poll, but I don't think people here really follow those sports.

This really depends on what you consider an athlete to be. Many people consider basketball players to be the most well rounded athletes. If this is the case, Kobe or Lebron would have to be up there.

Why does one HAVE to be the undisputed best of their league for you to count them? I think Brady isn't much of an athlete at all compared to many of the good NFL players in other positions. A QB has to be good, but is not as well rounded of an athlete as other positions. I would take several of the better MMA fighters over Brady as top athlete any day. I like football much more as a sport, but I can't argue that you must be a tremendous athlete to be consistently good in the MMA world... more so than other sports.

I voted for Brady... but then again, I don't follow any of the others well enough to know how good they are, besides Phelps.

First off I agree with you about Tom Brady, but I didn't know a better alternative in football.

If you read the OP I never said they needed to be the undisputed best. In fact, I said they are arguably the best.

Changed OP to best current player instead of athlete.

One guy that doesn't get nearly enough recognition.

Chase Utley.

EDIT: Thought we were talking MLB only. Of any sport, it'd probably have to be Tiger. He's the only "once in a generation" player on that list.

Ummmm I would argue Pujols (as well as most of the others on this list lol) is also a "once in a generation" player.

Give Lebron a slightly stronger supporting cast and he obliterates Kobe.

Dude also puts up vastly superior numbers and has a much, much higher basketball IQ.

Are we talking about athletics in general or just their specific sport? Lebron is clearly the best athlete of that list. He could probably hang with those others in their respective sports better than they can hang with him. Lebron has the most "Bo Jackson" in him out of that list, if you will.
