Greatest Book --> Movie Thread

My vote goes to Different Seasons by Stephen King.

Shawshank Resemption, Stand By Me and Apt Pupil all from one book. Not bad. 😛

My first thought was The Green Mile. Casting was excellent. The changes made to Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption were, I thought, well done. Another would be The Silence of the Lambs or The Stand. Seems most Stephen King works translate well to the screen. I really hope someone someday does a movie series based on The Dark Tower (but PLEASE don't let it be George 'my ego is bigger than the the known universe' Lucass or his buddy $pielberg)

LOTR fanboys will appear in 3... 2... 1...

My vote goes to High Fidelity. Hands down the most faithful adaptation of a book to a film that I've seen, and pretty entertaining, to boot.

I thought The Godfather was one of the only book/movie translations in which the film was actually better than the book. Actually, even though the movie Hannibal was nothing special, it was still far better than the dreadful book, and to that extent it is a feather in Ridley Scott's cap.

That book was far better than the movie. Red Dragon on the other hand was a far better movie.

Tou think so? I loved all of Thomas Harris' other books (including Black Sunday), but Hannibal is on my short list of the worst books I have ever read (out of untold thousands). I found it pointlessly grotesque, and its plotting just absurd. I was grateful that they changed the laughable ending from the book, but the film was still hamstrung by its awful source material. In my mind, the Harris films are ranked as follows:

1) SOTL
2) Red Dragon
3) Manhunter (the original, Michael Mann-directed adaptation of Red Dragon)
4) Black Sunday
5) Hannibal

I think whatever happened to Thomas Harris after SOTL should serve as a cautionary tale to other authors of the danger of too much success. I continue to be mystified by how anyone could exhibit such a vast dropoff in quality between books.

i must agree with shawshank, maybe not the whole different seasons novella thing cuz i haven't seen apt pupil...which btw was a very awesome story...but stand by me was pretty good and translated to the screen very well

definitely Fight Club

I'm serious... Chuck Palahniuk is one of the greatest authors of our time and the movie is just as good (and maybe even better than) the novel

It is sooooo scary how closely the Cohen brothers followed "The Odyssey, by Homer with their movie, "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou."
