Random thread. The bowline is a great knot, and I use it often. Between that, and the sheet bend 80% of my typical needs are covered. People should learn knots and rope tricks. It's much more flexible, and useful than the n00b straps people buy.

I usually just throw all my ropes into a box in the closet with my christmas lights. After a few months they form the strongest knots ever.

I learned it that way over 50 years ago in the Cub Scouts.

I've got into sailing a season ago. My buddy Phillipe was about to throw me out of the boat when he figured that I am not up to speed with it.

Second most useful, actually, because it only works if you've already got a fixed point to which to attach to, and you don't care about the length/tightness of the other end.

Clove hitch is the prime knot, to rule them all. They turn rope into something that can be used constructively. Tripod? Clove hitch. Raft? Clove hitch. etc. etc. etc.
Plus, it's really easy, and attaches to basically anything, can be tightened...

The only weakness is some propensity to lateral movement, on some material.

You can always throw a bowline in the end...feed the other end back through and make a loop...but yes, the clove hitch is also very useful.

My "go to" knots include:

bowline
clove hitch
square knot
sheet bend
"trucker's knot"

That's the best part. Those ungrateful bastards just lay around and use up energy. It's satisfying seeing them useful for a change :^P
