I just saved a lot of money on my car insurance!

Last year, my premium was $2,842.

This year, it's $1,081.

I guess keeping a clean driving record does offer some advantages. Now I just need to figure out what to do with the extra $150 each month.

Even $1,081 seems exceedingly high, or is insurance just very expensive in USA?

Depends on the laws of the state and proximity to major metropolitan areas.

$620 a year, two vehicles. Liability only - so I'm self insuring you might say. Still too high.

It's liability insurance against me causing an accident, not the car. As I can only drive one at a time, I see no reason for more than 1 liability policy - on me. Comprehensive would of course be per car as parked cars can be involved in accidents - they just don't cause them. If my parked car rolls away it's still my fault for not setting the parking brake, or not keeping the car maintained, not the car's, so a liability policy on me still applies. If it starts on fire my homeowner's insurance covers the structure and the liability on the car pays nothing. If it starts on fire at someone else's place then that's the car I have in service and my portable liability policy on me would apply.

But the insurance agent doesn't see it that way and he's got the men with guns (the state) on his side so I write the check and just bitch about it on ATOT and to anyone else who will listen 🙂

I drive a VW Jetta GLI, 2003. I'm a 28 year old male, in the DC area. Yes, I'm totally aware that my premium was previously pretty crazy, but I knew exactly why it was. Now that those tickets are off my record I'm glad to see the results.
