I've got some good ide drives with good space and almost no way to use them. Recommend me something to build my mom's pc.

I have been using the ASRock Z68 Fatal1ty Pro Gen3 since last October. It has a PATA (IDE) that you can connect two IDE hard drives to. I use it for my Plextor DVD burner (not an IDE hard drive). The motherboard also has a Floppy connector as well.

Why not just use an IDE->SATA adapter?
$2.99 shipped:

Should work with an IDE hard drive.
Can't comment about using with an IDE optical drive.
no it wont work we want to connect an ide drive
and that is to turn an ide of the motherboard into sate ports
so it will not work

or
http://www.addonics.com/products/adidesa.php

he needs this
then he can turn his ide devises to connect to any sata port on mainboard

Yeah the adapters are pretty cheap and then you can use those drives on any motherboard. IDE ports have gotten pretty rare.

I would get a controller card or an external enclosurer. I think the last chipset that we put IDE support on was the 945.

But with controller cards, you have the problem loading pre-drivers before the O/S don't you?? I have/had this problem with my current nForce570 board and XP if you want to boot from a IDE drive (optical or HDD).

(I don't want to use Win7)

Some of the P35 and I believe P45 boards had floppy and IDE ports via Marvell controller. Not fast, but they worked alright.

I don'r know about Abit boards, but my Gigabyte P35 boards used JMicron dual-SATA2 and IDE controller PCI-E chipsets.

I never had an issue with them.

You should be able to go to Newegg and use the guided search feature (look under PATA options) for what you want.

It shows a motherboard as new as the ASRock Z77 Professional as having a singe ATA133 IDE/Pata port. However... it only supports up to 2 devices max on that paticular board.

If I misunderstood I apologize... it seems like a long time since I dealt with non-sata devices already.

I have this device, looks exactly the same except that the pcb is black. I managed to hook up my old IDE drive to a sata2 port and pull out all of the data without any problems with bios or s/w. It works.

Edit- The 2nd sata connector on the converter is useless. The box says that its a bidirectional converter but it doesn't have the necessary IDE male connector to work.

Wouldn't you just plug the device directly into the port on the motherboard which is male in that case?

With a discreet PCI IDE conroller (as everybody suggests above) you might have:

1) slower boot times and overall performance
2) compatibility issues

It's best to have everything you need on the mainboard. Try to look for a mobo with the ports required. Plenty of options for LGA 775, for example. What's your processor?

Alternatively, you can use an external (USB) enclosure, if you only need to use those legacy devices from time to time.
