Great guitarists of all time

I'm thinking players like Kirk Hammet, Dimebag, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Randy Rhodes are definitely guitar heros in the metal scene

I'm still wondering why people think Hendrix was such a great guitarist???
He was very innovative; ahead of his time...
Yet, I never thought he was really *that* skilled... If he had lived a long and full life, I have doubts that we'd be ranking him quite as highly as he seems to often be ranked.

Hendrix is overrated period. Most jazz guitarists smash rock/metal guys with skill.

Lindsey's good.

Maclaughlin *, Satriani*, Schon*, Vai*, Randy Hansen*, Howard Leese*, Montrose*, Robbie Dunbar*, Stef Burns*, Robben Ford*,Shaunna Hall*, Jeff Watson*,Todd Rungren*, George Tickner*, Lars Fredricksen*, Steve Stephens*, Dave Meniketti*

bah

It's not just about skill. (And jazz and rock guitar are VERY different things)

Personally, John Pettrucci from Dream Theater is my favorite guitarist.

As a guitarist who grew up with a Dad who played and made me listen to all kinds of stuff, Hendrix, Clapton, Satriani, Eric Johnson, Al Di Meola, among many different styles of music, I think I have a pretty wide perspective to lay opinions down about guitarists...

I can shred like a mofo, but I can't fingerpick for shlt.. but I understand music is all about the melodies..

at the tender age of 25, after listening to all the greats, I have forged the opinion that John Petrucci is probably the greatest guitarist of modern history. He's played with Satriani, Vai, and many others, and he just never fails to come across like he is a technical robot with a soul...

Phil Keaggy is one of the most unknown guitarists, but still considered up there as one of the best.

We're talkin electric guitar. Accoustic is another matter 😉
Paco de Lucía, a fantastic Flemenco Guitarist. The first I ever heard of him was when he jammed with both Al Demoala and John McLaughlin on Al's song "Mediterranean Sundance" outplaying both Al and John, two well regarded Jazz Fusion Guitarists.

Don't know how Lindsey Buckingham ranks.

Your quest for the best really is a function of who had a lot of commercial exposure. Probably really great ones are uncredited studio session players whom nobody knows the names of but we hear on the radio.

Among the guitarists I've heard, some of the best are:

Acoustic: Andres Segovia (popularized guitar to the world), Christopher Parkening (Segovia said Parkening is the best), Leo Kottke, Ry Cooder, John Renbourn, Steve Stevens, The Romeros

Electric: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani

Wonder how Lindsey ranks? He doesn't.
Hendrix is the greatest. Period.
Most jazz guitarists bore rock guitarists to death.

I personally beg to differ, since we're both simply giving our opinions here, of which carry no weight in the real world, Lindsey is much more skilled than hendrix. But i suppose that's relative since they weren't quite in the same genre. Personally i regard Lindsey very highly, much higher than hendrix. I've never been able to sit down and listen to jimi, like i've been able to enjoy Lindsey. I would imagine you're just playing devils advocate or you're ignorant. But hey, in the end it's just an opinion.

Kind of suprised that you didn't put John Williams in there.

Anyways, regarding buckingham. He is definetly one of my favorite guitarists out there. I raelly couldn't put him at the top because he even he admits that he is limited in what he can do. He is self taught and he is only able to compose is a few keys. But i love his travis picking style.

And i am sure we can say that we all just love the guitar and what these amazing artists can do with a piece of wood and strings.
