I was using a Godmode cheat in Halflife 2 and got stuck at the bottom of a shaft with no way out. Couldn't disable the cheat to commit Suicide even.

Cheats I use when I just want to get through the game
Walkthrus I use when it seems I've tried everything, but can't get past a spot in the game.

i try not to use them ... there are some games that I wouldn't have finished without cheating, not becuase they were difficult, but because they sucked

Ultima 9 was one of those games; you actually couldn't complete the game without cheating [no clipping] to get past 2 or 3 spots because of shoddy programming. :frown:

I don't use cheats cause i know how that ends up...

But, i've ruined a few MMOs accepting too much for free from people. So now, starting with LOTRO, i insist on reciprocating in some way !! Sometimes i have to force feed, lol.

I once did the opposite. Playing Planescape: Torment the second time, I gave my char 25 windom/int/whatever so I could see all the best conversations.

I won't lie... if enough bad things happen in Nethack, eventually I go to the Nethack wiki to find out why. What does it mean when I read a scroll and hear maniacal laughter in the distance? What are all the methods for removing this ball and chain from my leg? How do I remove a curse?

WHY is it a bad thing for me to sacrifice a zombie to Crom on an altar? It's undead, I should be thanked! Instead Crom turns me into a retarded chimpanzee and has his priest molest me with a mace.

Reading about all the mechanics does hamper the enjoyment, but learning how a complex game works can be addictive. Bah, in 2 months I can't get a character past level 10, and that's WITH using the Wiki! 🙂

fallout 3. i was having a real problem with finding where to go next and stumbled across some of the cheats. now, in single player games ill finis the game and THEN go find the cheats to mess with. i hadnt finished the game yet, and knowing how to get unlimited ammo and weapons kind of ruined my need to finish the game now

Let's see, STALKER, I initially cheated for ammo, then put in a mod to make game ammo more readily available. I don't think that really ruined the game though.

Definitely any tycoon type game: cheating in something like Railroad Tycoon pretty much kills the game.

Man...Ultima 9. That brings back bad memories. Great series and finished off by that shitty game. I never even finished it, and I was hyped out for years waiting for that game.

The original Command & Conquer was somewhat ruined for me when I read online that you could extend your base with cheap sandbags that the enemy wouldn't attack. Stretch out a long line of sand bags, block the route the enemy is advancing on, then build a bunch of turrets.
Missions that were very difficult to complete became snoozers. It might have been more satisfying if I had figured it out myself...

Doom 3 is the only one that I can remember enabling god mode, just to get through the rest of the game. I had lost interest, and just wanted to see the last boss. Warcraft I used to use the cheat commands for money/resources.

The main quest of Morrowind was ruined for me by...my dad. I started playing the game feverishly, he got interested, I never got around to the main quest, then he told me all about it as he went through it. It didn't really ruin my experience though - I played it for 3 months straight, then picked it up randomly at times for a year or 2 after.

There are games that I ruined because I cheated, mostly because I couldn't get through an area and went and looked up how to do it, then couldn't resist doing it throughout the rest of the game which ruined the immersion of the game.

I can think of one game that cheats actually increased the immersion factor: Neverwinter Nights 2. I enabled all of my companions to travel with me wherever I went. That way I always had the little storyline advances wherever I went, and not just if I got lucky and brought the right guy. Besides the party limit thing made no sense in the game. It was an arbitrary limit that Obsidian didn't even attempt to explain into the game mechanics. It just hurt your immersion level since you are trying to save the world, but only a few of your friends will help you at a time while the rest just hang out at the bar.
