I understand that Starcraft was the best for its time, but haven't other games surpassed it now?

In the RTS world? No.

Honestly I'd be surprised if you and every other starcraft fanboy has even tried half the RTS's out there, given your opinion. It's ridiculous how people can be stuck in 1998 and think nothing can be better.

I've played my fair share of RTS games. Starcraft is inargueably among the top five of all time.

IMO Total Annihilation is bar-none the best RTS game ever made. I even prefer Red Alert over Starcraft.

This coming from the guy who said Red Alert 2 was a good game. Rofl.
C&C stopped being enjoyable after the first Red Alert.

It's certainly not a comprehensive list (as I indicate within my post), and no, I do not play WoW. MMOs, since they all basically follow the Everquest formula for success, are not my cup of tea. I used to rather enjoy Ultima Online, though, until the advent of a PvP-free land.

Starcraft is probably the best multiplayer strategy game out there, even after all these years, and the campaign was pretty darn good on top of that. If you didn't like Morrowind, I'm guessing you also don't like jobs where the boss isn't hovering over you, telling you exactly what to do at any given moment. I can respect that; some people just aren't self-starters. I'm not sure of the Japanese number for American III (which is the one I consider so good, although American II was pretty good, too), so I can't exactly refute your statement about Final Fantasy.

Your opinion on MMO's has no basis, which is clearly because you don't play any. I've played dozens, they are not all the same, and EQ was not even close to the first, nor the most successful. If you like RPG's, then you should definitely reconsider them. Just take my advice, don't play EQ or WoW. Or any free ones.

Kohan is leaps and bounds over what Starcraft is, and I've yet to find a game that beats it. Even C&C:Generals is better than Starcraft, and I doubt even a sequel could beat it. Starcraft was good for it's time, but it was surpassed a long time ago.

I liked Morrowind at first, but there are critical flaws in it's design as an RPG. These flaws are later in the game, which is why the game got such great reviews from reviewers that only played it a week. Week 2 is usually when disappointment sets in for any game(except those few truly despairing titles you beat in the first week), and that's why we see so many overrated games.

The japanese number of III is VI, FFV was never released in america. They said we weren't mature enough for it. Some of the best classic RPG's weren't released in america, like seiken dentetsu 3, which I loved more than any in the FF series. I don't know why so many liked FFIII, I didn't even finish it, found it to be sort of boring really. FFV has more depth, with a class system like FF Tactics if you've ever played that.

Lmao.. learn how to play Starcraft and come back. Kohan doesnt even come close to SC. Nor are there any Multiplayer Strategy games that surpasses it. again, go learn how to play it and come back.

i played a TON of RTS games. i personally love rts games, and they oppucy 90% of my gaming time. (with some coutnerstrike ;)) i played starcracft, C&CCG, the original red alert (witch is suprisnig, cause im only 12, but i remember playing it back when i was young, and found the CD and retryed it) and junk. SC is great, and on the top.. 3. but nothing beats red alert. nothing. ever.

If you are referring to me, I've never said Red Alert was good, I never liked the first one so I didn't even try the 2nd. I've only really enjoyed the original and Generals.

Kohan is 10x better than Starcraft. Starcraft is a traditional rush RTS, and those are too simple to be in any top spot. Kohan isn't as slow as Total War, but not nearly as rushing as Starcraft and games like it. You can increase the speed if you want though, if it gets too slow, which is great.

Kohan 2, on the other hand, is too much like a blizzard RTS to be worth it. Dawn of War was more like kohan than kohan 2....

You are being presumptious thinking I don't know how to play it. You know C&C was better than Starcraft and it came out 2 years before SC. SC wasn't bad, but it's never been the best. I could easily list 5 games right now that are better than SC.

You missed out on some much better gaming
This could be an incorrect assumption, but it certainly *appears* that you have been deliberately avoiding the original poster's question ("What bargain bin games have I missed?") for fear of people attacking your beliefs, just as you are attacking their beliefs. Rather than sitting back and picking apart what everyone else says, it could be more constructive for you to actually list the games that we've all, apparently, overlooked.

The only really firm recommendations I see from you are in the realm of strategy: Kohan, Generals, and Battlecry. What are the best of these "dozens" of MMOs you've played? Do you enjoy RPGs, FPSs? What I want is a short list: Malak's Ten Best Games Ever Made. Not only would it be more polite, it would actually be on topic.

Dude, what's up with you and your hatred towards SC. Everyone's entitled to an opinion but you make it seem like everyone who likes or plays SC is an idiot. Get a clue...SC is one of the best selling RTS games for a reason.

anyone who knows how to play sc will not be making those statments. for the last time, go learn how to play it, as your opinion on so called "better games" have no meaning.

The Sims is one of the biggest selling games of late. Doesnt make it good.

On the subject of RTSes, they would hardly exist if it wasnt for Westwood Studios and for me in general, they did them best. Starcraft rivals the greatest of all time but seriously, Dune 2 is THE daddy.

For the OP:

Freespace 1 + Silent Threat + 2 = Best space combat sims ever bar none.
Heros of Might & Magic 3 = Excellent turn-based RPG/RTS thingy.
Diablo 1 & 2 = The best hack'n'slash RPG, still has a large community online.
Mechwarrior 2, 3, 4 + expansions = Mech action, unique games. Fun to play and decent stories.
Homeworld 1 + 2 Fully 3D RTS. Great graphics, great story, draws you in and only spits you out when it gets tricky nearer the end.

Well, one I never got around to trying out when it was released, but that I've always wanted to take a look at was Interstate '76.
