Amazon has the Samsung SCM-51 8mm Camcorder on sale for $199.99 from $299.99. On top of this, you can use a 10% off coupon to reduce your price even further, and you'll end up paying just about $180 for this camcorder. Considering some of the features (such as a huge 440X Digital Zoom that this thing has), this is an EXCELLENT price for it. The lowest price I was able to find on pricegrabber was $259.95! This is not the TOP OF THE LINE type camcorder, but it will do just fine for $180. You can't even get a decent digital camera for $180.

Here's what you need to do:

1) Click http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004TRZE/ for the camcorder.

2) When checking out, enter the 10% coupon into the "Gift Certificate" box.

3) Voila! You'll get a 10% discount on the price you will pay. Keep in mind this coupon expires on March 31st, so please hurry if you want this.

4) Feel free to check out other prices for this on PriceGrabber by clicking http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php?masterid=380378found=2&search=SCM-51

Enjoy!

nice deal... here are some specs...

Product Description
Despite its low price, the Samsung SCM-51 camcorder has a surprisingly extensive set of features. It has 440x (22x optical) variable-speed digital power zoom, manual focus controls, 0.3 lux minimum visible illumination for excellent low-light sensitivity, and a built-in wide-angle lens, allowing an exceptionally wide view in tight areas (especially useful for indoor recordings). Macro mode allows extreme close-up recordings all the way down to 0.04 inches. A six-mode program auto exposure button adjusts camera settings for optimum results in a variety of situations: sports, portrait, spotlight, sand/snow, high speed shutter, and auto. The camera also has digital special effects, including mosaic, mirror, negative, emboss, cinema, and makeup.

It looks like a pretty small one from what I saw of the picture too. If it had one of those flip-out LCD panels, it would definitely be a GO for me.

errr... I haven't been keeping up with camcorders in a while so this might seem like a really stupid question:

What do digital camcorders record on? (type of media)
Also, any other real basic info on digital camcorders appreciated because I'd like to eventually get a camcorder but not sure if I should go with digital or old-school.

Thanks.

A 440X digital zoom isn't that great of a deal. Digital zoom in general isn't that useful - it just enlarges the pixel size. Something at 440X digital zoom will be REALLY fuzzy. The numbers that mater are Optical zoom 22X on this camera according to the review.

7lords,

"Something at 440X digital zoom will be REALLY fuzzy"

We have a camera that does 400X zoom, and everything comes out quite nicely.

no color view finder i can live with. but without stability equalization, my videos come out all jumpy and stuff. otherwise this is a sweet deal
