I'm possibly wrong about this, but...
Isn't adopting an animal from a pound/shelter kinda like adopting a kid nowadays? I've heard stories about having to have a stable job, someone around the house for a good deal of the time, grown kids or no kids at all etc.
They'd rather keep them in a shelter than give them away to potential animal abusers or something. But hey i dunno 🙂
Maybe it was just the ASPCA. Anyone care to share experiences on the subject?

You guys are depressing me. Got me to thinking about those puppy mills that breed pupppies en masse and treat them horribly so you can buy from a store at an exhorbitant price for an animal you may or may not be equipped to treat properly

It's like that because of too many return visitors... They were running into 2 problems... first some people went through a lot of pets and second a lot of pets came back because people didn't realize the level of work required...
It gets even stranger when you get into zoneing laws... where I live your have up to 3 dog and 3 cats... not 6 cats or 6 dogs... and it makes no difference as to size Great Dane vs. Poodle... really ate up...
I had a friend who work Animal Control for awhile... oh the funny stories... like the call for a vicous dog that was chasing people... got there and it was three legged Chihuahua...

Did you know that in Asia, you can go into a restaurant and pick out a dog and they'll kill it on the spot and cook it for you, same as the way we pick out a lobster and have it cooked alive?
I wonder what it's like for people who believe a cow is a sacred animal, seeing the cows eaten practically eveywhere in America at the millions of fast food places, and watching the butchers cut them up at the grocery store.

I think breakit23 has a good point, that carrying on about a puppy is a bit silly when we are munching chicken from animals that are nearly tortured during the production cycle.
But this is a hot deal from the sense that you can get a cat or dog for around 50 bux after they charge for shots and stuff.
But if you ain't a vegetarian, think of all the animals being killed in the name of your meat-eating diet. Just a thought before you get carried away with saving a couple kitties at the animal shelter.

Who told you this info??? I'm not sure about other countries, but I'm from Vietnam, and dogs aren't some sort of delicasse or anything. People eat dog because they're poor and starving, and everything looks good when you haven't eaten for 3 days.

you have dones an admirable job of displaying your ignorance and living up to your name. just because you have an affiliation with vietnam doesn't make you an expert on asia, as you have clearly demonstrated.
did you know that wealthy people in china eat monkey brains RIGHT OUT OF THE ANIMALS SKULL? they have a special table that they clamp the monkeys head in and they use an expensive little hammer to bash the monkeys skull in and then scoop out the brains and eat them. the monkey obviously is not too happy about this, so clamping them in the table keeps them still during the skull bashing, but they still scream and trash about. this is a very expensive dish and is considered a delicacy by all that are wealthy enough to afford it.

If you were a dog, would you rather be free and eat whatever you want, f&#* any bitch you want, or would you rather become someone's slave and be castrated and eat only sh#&ty dog food? Face it, animals don't want to be your pets. As one famous dog said, "They may take our lives, they'll never take our freedom."

Why not westwood? They don't have to hunt, they don't have to gather. They get to stay inside when it's raining. They get the security of being safe at night. And all they have to do in return for all of this is play with the owner, sit in his/her lap, and get petted (which they like to do anyway). Sounds like a rather hot deal to me. 🙂 And what is this stuff about crappy dog food...how do we know they hate it. We don't like grass, but it's the food of choice for cows.

I'm chinese and I've recently just came back from a trip there. I've asked a couple of people questions and guess what? Not unlike here in the USA and across the world, there's quite a few people in China that will NOT eat beef. Yes, they'll eat dog. Why? Because, when a cow is the backbone of your farmlands, which does the plowing and grunt work, they are worshipped and I guess, you can say they are pets to the kids, who rides them and stuff.
See how this pet/animal/food thing comes along? Different parts of the world, different work, different ethics, different thinking.

I know there is a breed of dog that is (and always have been bred for food) What gets up my nose is that in china cats and dogs are being killed for thier fur and then exported to the usa and other western countries. Its not a pretty sight watching a german shepard being strangled with fence wire.and it gets me pissed!

well what i say bluntly in their face is, i dont devour any FLESH. Again, what is the deffrence from eating Dog meat and cow meat? or even human?

In fact, it happens in Korea every day. What they do is they take a whole bunch of dogs, put them in a large cage, and then they drop the cage down a hill until they are nearly dead. Then customers come and choose which dog they want. They are then chopped up and ready to go (no, I am not trying to be funny). It's pretty disgusting actually. I almost vomited when I heard about it too.
In addition, I know that several Veitnamese restaurants in Colorado offer dogs to eat as well. Filipinos eat dogs as well. So it does happen.
And just so you know, I am not trying to pick on the Asians or anything cause I just happen to be Asian.
Oh well, peace out.
