Great case where the punishment fits the crime...

that must've been embarrassing, but 4 hours of embarrassment versus 60 days in jail? thats a no brainer

yep i agree, i think its a good punishment for minor shoplifting...60 days in jail is just a waste of money for such a small crime

I've taken stuff from Wally World before by accident. Like I would put it in the basket, and it would slide to the bottom back part. I wouldn't notice it until I am unloading my purchase into the trunk. Of course I never bring it back in and pay because I am the devil.

I love the caption under the pic: "Cruel and unusual punishment? Shoplifters are forced to wear I am a thief signs."

Umm, they weren't forced at all. They could have gone to jail for 60 days

Did you read what the one person said though? She was bringing an item up to the service desk and was apprehended. That seems weird, because Wal-Mart rules say the person has to leave the store before you can even say they're shoplifting no matter how convincing it is.

She looks like a thief.

A judge here did that a couple of years ago. Woman stole some stuff in a mall. He made her stand for 4 hours with a similar sign.

People were spitting on her, throwing food/drinks at her, etc.

Saw a piece a while back about some convenience store doing this (apparently it became "cool" for local high schoolers to steal stuff from the store).

If they caught a shoplifter, they could either go to the cops, or the kid would have to work for a week or two at the store wearing an "I'm working here because I got caught shoplifting" shirt.

I actually did that once too. I was shopping and my son put a Winnie the Pooh stuffed bear in our basket and I didn't notice because he has one exactly like it so I thought it was his. Later I saw the tag on it and realized we left the store without paying for it.

haha i dunno about making them work at the store, sounds like it would just make it easier for them to shoplift more stuff...

I wonder if Walmart was cool with this? Some may interpret it as Walmart itself forcing them to wear the signs. Doesn't really fall in line with the yellow smiley face.

Anyway, good punishment.

I almost helped steal something when I was little. I put a pack of gum in my mom's purse when we were at the checkout counter. I don't think I was actually doing it on purpose, I was not the smartest kid. When she found it, she was SOOOO mad. She turned around, drove back to the store, went back in, and paid for it.

"Outside the store, she said people who saw her wearing the sandwich board commented that the punishment was "cruel.""

Why did they bother to print that comment? Of course she is going to say that, she is a lying thief.

Reminds me of Curb Your Enthusiasm. He sees someone with a sign outside a store like this. Later on he accidentally steals a fork from a restaurant, and the judge makes him wear a sign!

I was getting groceries a couple years ago and gave my daughter permission to buy a book. When I got out to the car, I realized that she had it in her hand and it didn't get scanned with the rest of the groceries. She was too little to know any better, she thought the checker would ring it up anyway. I walked my kids back in and went to the customer service desk and told them what happened and paid for it.
