ChopOMatic: Consistently finds things that Norton and McAfee miss

jnem: AVG has detected some Viruses that Norton didn't

How do you know those are viruses AVG is detecting? According to PC Magazine: "AVG missed six viruses on our Virus Detection test and had seven false positives".

For those who use this product I have a few questions:

I have 4 PC's running 4 different MS OS:
Windows XP pro
Windows NT4 server
Windows 2000 server
Windows 98 SE

Is AVG software 100% stable on all these OS's?

I have a situation where I need to check a single file from time to time on the Windows NT server machine, is there a way to run a command line scan of a single file using AVG?
Will AVG run as a service natively on Win NT4 server, or would I need to start it with a program like servany?

Either reply here or PM me, thanks!

HELP. I downloaded this software and I tried to install it and when I pressed setup it went into a new installation program for Grokster. What is going on here?? Am I missing something. I even reinstalled grokster and it just installed it without installing the AV program-am I misssing something???

I have had AVG and Zone Alarm installed for over six months and have been
virus free and I am online about 90 hours a week.
It works great with WXP.
They are fantastic products and like visa says they are "PRICELESS"!!

😛

I used to use AVG and liked it. Then I tried F-Secure and it found 2 files AVG did'nt (Yes it had the current updates) also is not good with Klez detection. Not bad for free, but you get what you pay for.

😎

The Klez detection problem was fixed with the May 24 update.

Also detection of the new virus Worm/Benjamin and new variant of I-Worm/Yaha - I-Worm/Yaha.D
was added May 21 and detection of the new virus JS/SQLSpida was added May 29.

What were the two files?

AVG has blocked several Klez intrusions over the past months and
I have used third party scans like Norton several times to make sure nothing
has breached my security.
I also let AVG update daily.

🙂I've used it for over a year now - Great, Great piece of work.

It is not free for EuroFolks though🙁

Czech product!!! - I hope, it'll stay free for US users.😎

I use it. Only complaint is that it conflicts with SETI when they both start on boot-up, but that can be worked around.

Can anyone please help me??
I posted this yesterday and no one responded yet and I don't want it to get lost in the rest of the posts. What am I doing wrong??

lol of course I downloaded it from that site and I clicked it. I am not an idiot. I think something is up with that site perhaps,. Can someone else please try re downloading that program agaion and tellin gme if it worked??

Shmuel, I have no idea what you're doing wrong, but I just downloaded the current version a few moments ago, v6368, here, and it looks essentially the same as the version I already had, no Grokster installer. Is your downloaded file 5,218KB or smaller?

yep 5218KB. I just downloaded from the link you just sent. lets see what happens. It is the same name as the one I already downloaded so its probably the same thing but lets wait and see. BTW, does anyone who downloaded this have the program Grokester? maybe somehow if you have this program it affects the AV program from being installed.

Another question to you guys who have this program-does it set itself up as a program icon on your prgrams menu?? Does it show up in your list of programs when you go into ad/remove programs oin control panel? It doesnt show up on any of my things and I really dont knwo what to do here.

nope, even the copy you just gave me the link to, Mindless, is ust giving me a grokster installer. What do I do now? any ideas??

have you cleared your temp folder? since alot of app installers uncompress stuff to a temp folder... ive had this happen a few times when i installed 2 programs, one after another... i just used norton cleansweep fast sweep to clear everything out..

The Grokster installer should be running from a file named "setup.exe"... delete that file from the windows temp folder, or whatever folder your OS has the "temp" variable pointing to. When AVG is extracting it's files (right after you execute the downloaded file), it's set to extract a "setup.exe" file into the same folder that already contains the Grokster setup.exe file, and it doesn't overwrite it. Instead, it then automatically executes the "setup.exe" file, assuming it's the correct file, not the Grokster setup file.

I use AVG on all my builds for friends/family/myself. First off, free. Nothing can beat using totally freeware rather than shareware or hack stuff. Secondly, it doesn't seem to be as intrusive as Mcafee or Norton. So, it doesn't take as much resources it seems. I really only have a few problems with the software.

1) Virus Dat Updating- You can only specify a time to check....if you don't have a net connection or are on at that time, it will just skip and wait until the next day/week/whatever at that time again. So you have to pick a time when you are on normally. Not a big deal, but I do like the fact that if Mcafee misses an update time, it will just schedule for next run.

2)E-mail scanning- I am a hardcore anti-outlook guy. I use eudora and it does certify that mail. But I decided to test outlook so i could also pick up my hotmail through it. I turned on the outlook 5 support (even though I am running 6) and it does not certify anymore. In fact, i doubt it would stop any outlook virus vbs if i was just viewing my mail. All it did was add a toolbar that gives you options to scan manually. Big friggin deal. Going to go back to Eudora.

3)Doesn't allow custom scan times- You can set one manually to run now, or set it to run every day...but there is no way to set up a weekly scan or such. Even if they did add that, im sure you could only set a specific time and if you missed that time, it would skip it like it does the dat updates.... 😛

4) Virus protection- I have had at least 3 occasions where it caught a JS virus going in my system...but it allowed it to pass by me. All it did was pop up a box that said something to the effect of "I think that JS had a virus, you might want to run a scan". At least Mcafee stops it and asks what you want to do with the script. And, while we are on the subject, it also annoys me that you can only send you viruses that it finds to the "virus vault" during a scan. Only after they are there, you can work or delete them. I wouldn't mind this as much if it was total active and stuck everything there and just notified me. Ah well.

I do believe "you get what you pay for". And also subscribe that having this is alot better than having nothing or McAfee bogging down my system. If they would just add a few usability features, this would be a total solid product for me.

On a side note...for the dude, Cutn2, trying to download Office XP...screw that bloatware too. If you want a free office suite that works just as well and again, ITS FREE. Try these:

602 Software

or

Open Office Suite based on StarOffice 6.0.

Hope this helps guys. 😀

About the certification problem with Outlook Express, I found this info at their website

In the Outlook Express application, it is not possible to add certification text to incoming mail.
Body HTML messages and attachments are checked and when a virus is detected, the user is
informed through dialog box.

Both incoming and outgoing email are checked but only outgoing email has the certification text.

Also you might contact Grisoft about the problems you have with AVG, it might not help but its
worth a try. 😉

Can't speak for Grisoft, but I can for McAfee.

My wife's lappy is from her company...their IT dude insists that all systems run McAfee.

Our two desktops run InnoculateIT PE. All three machines are on a home network. Two days ago, I spent a good three hours disinfecting all the machines. For some reason, my wife's desktop wasn't running real-time, and either her desktop or lappy contracted both Klez and Nimda. Because one of my drives was shared, I also got Nimda (but only on the shared non-C:\ drive...whew!), but not Klez. IPE immediately caught it, and only a few replications happened on my machine (it was wild to watch it procreate!), and IPE was able to quickly wipe it out.

My wife's desktop took longer...there were a couple-thousand replications. But IPE did the job.

McAfee stunk up the room. Even after we downloaded the latest signatures, that POS couldn't delete squat for Nimda. So I installed IPE and cleaned it, then told her to delete McAfee. She said no, she has to have it, that's required by the IT dude at work.

I said OK, but the lappy goes on dial-up, and it's not allowed to connect to the home network anymore.

She sent an email to the IT dude that she had deleted McAfee, and that it wouldn't be re-installed

I recently purchased Norton SystemWorks 2002 for $34.99 from CostCo B&M after $20 rebate, I'm wondering if I should return it?

I have a modern P4 1.6 system and the most intensive task I do is e-mail so I'm not worried about system resources being bogged down.

I do use Kazaa and am concerned about viruses being transmitted from all the stuff I'm downloading.

Just to be safe can I install both Norton SystemWorks 2002 and AVG? Will they work in perfect harmony together? Using Windows XP Pro if that matters.

How do I automatically virus scan EVERYTHING DOWNLOADED automatically?

Thanks.

Rossman: Going to have to go off memmory here, since my AVG system is at home and here at the office we are using Mcafee....but, it has options to scan all incomming and outgoing files. So, it should be a RTS(real time scanner) just like the rest of the progs. Another small /partial gripe is that I don't know what/if AVG is scanning anything. 🙂 I can never tell if it scanned a file or not. I guess that is a good thing since I don't notice any difference in performance or disk access with AVG like i would with Mcafee. ~shrug~

I don't use file sharing through kazaa and such too much, so i don't know how it handles downloads like that, but I assume it handles it just like Mcafee or Norton would. If you were really afraid of viruses, i would suggest you do what I do with my IRC files. I stick them all in a temp folder and after a night or session of grabbing stuff, I just rightclick on the folder and have it scan it right then. Just to be on the safe side.

Already told you about the JS realtime scanning and at least it catches it and tells you. Better than not knowing at all. 😛 I have had it catch one virus through normal file means. But, knock on wood, I haven't had a real attack and haven't had the reason to worry about how well it scans.

Free is good, free is definately my kinda price. Especially when its legally free. 🙂 In my opinion, both the Norton product and the Mcafee product are very comprehensive and great. But the do seem to tax the system pretty hardcore when you have it scanning real time activity. With great protection and scanning come great performance costs. I guess you just have to deal with it when it comes to stuff like that.

BTW, using XP too.
