Looking to buy a decent monitor for my recording studio. Don't need anything with "ub3r l33t" refresh rates...or anything..... maybe something with component in and 720p or something so that it can double as a gaming screen.

I do prefer a 24" more than the 22, but if the price is right.....!!!

Even if it goes a little over $225, I might bite, so post whatever you guys really like.

What bout the Samsung 2333SW? I am even looking at one of these, value for money they HECTIC and support full HD (1080p) etc etc 🙂
 
Go for a 24" (1920x1200). They're great once you have them. Check the hot deals section, most LCDs are all the same quality now, even hard to tell my friends' 6bit TN from my 8-bit PMVA.
 
NightDarker, if your recording work requires lots of work space (multiple apps and windows), which I imagine it does, even from my brief forays into Apple's amateur app Garage Band, then you should probably go for a 24-inch display with 1920x1200 resolution. Some good recommendations have already been made, though you'll almost certainly be getting a TN panel at your price range. Though as theR00kie has helpfully pointed out, there are Soyos which may be PVA panels.

If picture quality matters a great deal to you, then you should definitely go in for the Dell 2209WA (e-IPS) for $214 if you chat with a Dell rep. $223 if you use the current 20 per cent coupon on Dell Small Business. There is a massive thread on Hard|Forum discussing this display. It's almost certainly the best overall display you can buy for < $300, and probably < $400. Pity it's 1680x1050.
 
How will a HD1080p video look on a 1050 monitor? Obviously it will be resized, but will it be noticeable? On my current 16x12 Dell, the 1080p videos have a slight soft look due to the resize. Just wondering how it looks going the other way.
 
Winterpool, I agree with you. I think that a 1920x1200 monitor would be far better to use. Recording does require many windows to be opened at one time, so, yes.... I will look at these Soyo monitors. The Dell eIPS looks like a great deal but I do want that extra res....

So you guys think I'd be cool with a Soyo?
 
The only reason I'm not getting one of the Dells is because it's not 1080p or higher. So I can see why you'd shy away from it. The Soyo seems to be luck of the draw, many people score on a good some, but there are many complaints about getting bad ones.

Depending if you can wait a bit, there's supposedly 1920x1080 e-IPS monitors due out soon. I don't have an exact date, but I can't imagine it being too long.

Indeed, be aware what you're getting into with the Soyos. It isn't exactly the most trusted marque these days. It might prove more prudent to find a good TN panel in your price range rather than hope Soyo gifts you with a good MVA (afraid I don't know sh!te about TN panels, except I don't want 'em -- jah, I know there's probably one in my MacBook Pro).

Since the markets managed to hold on to their gains today, I let myself order the Dell 2209WA this afternoon. I too would have preferred 1920x1200 or at least 1920x1080, but I'm not sure if 1080 e-IPS displays will be available before the summer. In the meantime, image quality is paramount, so I went with the IPS panel I could afford.

If my finances permit, I'll buy a higher-res monitor later this year (perhaps NEC, if the equities fairy is very nice). Dunno if I'll then run three monitors...
 
I really like my Soyo - it's awesome! However if you can't be garaunteed of getting the PVA panel from Soyo, then you might as well buy a from a bigger name brand. A friend of mine just bought this one:

and he's pretty happy with it.

The Dell eIPS looks like it could be a really nice LCD, although there hasn't been much in the way of real reviews of it. It will have great viewing angles and a very good picture. I'd still probably rather go for a 24" LCD, though.

I wonder if this thread will end up with more posts regarding < and > signs than actual monitor recommendations.
Anyway, I'll reiterate what I said the first time. My Soyo 24" P-MVA looks great, even compared to my friend's Samsung (one of the best TNs out there). While watching basketball on his TN, I thought it was the OTA HD being scaled that caused it to look weird. However, I figured out that I was actually looking from side to side on the screen, which meant I was looking at it at different angles, which caused the colors to shift slightly just by looking at different sides of the screen.
This does not happen on my P-MVA screen.
 
I'm afraid to bite on the Soyo on eBay........I want this good panel you guys are talking about but.... ahhh!!!! DECISIONS.

I guess when it all boils down to it, it won't matter when I'm recording stuff (hopefully).

I'll post back when I buy 🙂
