How long is reasonable for a recent college grad to study for the GRE general test before attempting it?

Also, anyone recommend some good prep materials (books/flashcards, etc.)?

3 months or so should be plenty. At least thats roughly the amount of time I prepared.

I did it in 10 days (last minute decision).

Having an engineering background, the quatitative section wasn't a problem for me.

The verbal section destroyed me, but to be honest, I don't think I would have done much better even if I had more time to prepare.

After you've done a few practice exams and get a feel for what the test is like, doing well on it is more about intelligence, not how much you study.

you should really practice a lot before you even try the real one. getting a low 1000's won't make you look good.

I took it just recently, December 19, and studied for about three weeks beforehand. I have been out of college for five years and I felt I did okay. I work as a chemist and I did rather well in the quantitative section, but much like an above poster the verbal raped me.

I would recommend a couple of months at least, and study that vocabulary. Personally I don't think there is much to study for the math section, but that just may depend on your mathematical aptitude; but the vocab is nothing but brute memorization.
