GRE - how'd I do

I took the GRE and I think because I was too cocky on the verbal part I bombed it. I usually do well on verbal/analytical type tests so I think I didn't take it seriously enough. I ended up getting 530 verbal and 670 quantitative.

I'm beginning to think the computer gave me the results wrong because my SAT results were the exact opposite and I haven't taken a math class in years. Anyway am I stuck going to Basketweaving University?

You might want to retake that...

BTW, the GRE verbal score is ALWAYS the harder one. For math, well, there's really not much of an excuse for a score that isn't near-perfect. So the numbers that you're seeing are probably accurate.

I remember someone here on ATOT posted that if you had an engineering degree and didn't get an 800 on quantitative, you should rip up your diploma. While I wouldn't take it that far, you have to have a pretty high score on quantitative to look good.
I got a perfect score on quantitative and it was only 94th percentile...


/edit: On reviewing the numbers, you actually didn't do all that bad. Both scores are around the 65th percentile. Your call.

What are you going for in grad school?

My math was 790, but my verbal was 540. I went in for engineering. For engineering/science/math, anything less than 780 is not good.

I'd say in general, your scores are mediocre at best. I would consider getting a retest if it isn't good enough for the grad schools you are interested in.

I'm applying to library sciences so I only wanted enough quantitative not to look like a dunce and I think I accomplished that. My major isn't math related so I doubt the school expects anything more from me. I think I did well on the analytical bit so hopefully that repairs the verbal score.. at $140 and a Feb 1 deadline I can't retake it.

Well basically its UWash and then backup is University of Alberta and backup backup is University of Western Ontario. I have a 3.2 GPA my last two years so I think UW is not going to happen anyhow, and the Canadians don't care about the GRE so I guess ultimately this doesn't change much but the test fee money missing from my pocket.

edit: the more I think about this the more the only explanation is I misread the numbers or the computer was wrong.. it is very surprising I got that high of a math score and that low of a verbal score, and amusing (but suspicious) to me that it is the opposite of my SATs

No idea about library sciences. I feel like there are a lot more engineers and such on this board, so they might be biased. It really depends on what your major looks for and how much emphasis they place on GREs. For engineering, schools are really trying to weave out the mentally challenged.

err I should rephrase that. I'm thinking I wrote the results down wrong from the computer screen. Some of the words I got got the verbal bit make me think I was in the more advanced stages and not in the dumbed down stages towards the end of the test.

And that isn't just me thinking I'm smarter than the test says.. its me thinking I'm dumber too. I don't see how I am in the 65%+ percentile of math.

lol. the sad truth.

The GRE is a crapshoot.

I did 620 verbal (my strong suit) and 710 math (lucky). leading up to it, I was performing pretty low on all the prep tests. I certainly didn't expect to do as well as that, and no way in hell I'm gonna take it again (assuming it doesn't expire... *crosses fingers)

I never said math was my strong suit.. but I literally guessed on some of the math portion because I didn't care as much about it, and on the verbal I'm remembering some of the words and how confident I was in most of my answers and it seems to me I must have mixed up the scores. If not, oh well, I really shouldn't have wasted the money to take the test to begin with since its only for UW and I have no chance there.
