Wife and I watched it tonight, we thought it was really good. At the end of the movie..
I thought the way her luck was going, a alligator would pop out of the lake and snatch her D:

Since the partial government shutdown, what about the US astronauts who are currently in space? Still working as normal? This website says there are currently six people in space right now (two of them are American). How does the shutdown affect them?

Shutdown or not, I figure they can't exactly just pack up and head home. There's still a skeleton crew of mission control people on the ground supervising them, right?

We still have a full team in the Mission Control Center (MCC). Basically anyone who was already scheduled to work was deemed essential and could come in to support ops.

I wasn't on the schedule at the time so I wasn't deemed essential. However the on console team has the right to call in anyone they need if we have a failure, so there's that.

So of the 3% of NASA still working, most of them are in ISS mission operations.

I have to say....I hadn't been to a movie in at least 18 months...had never been to a 3-D movie, and hadn't been to an Imax since I was 11 or so (almost 20 years?).

I combined all 3 and am very glad I did. Amazing visuals.

M wife does not like sci fi movies. This doesn't seem like sci fi other than it is about outer space.

If this is a sci-fi movie though, I'm better off seeing it with my brother in law.

I can't stand "Sci-fi" movies.....

This is technically Science Fiction, but is at least based on the universe that we all live in.

Go see it with both...

I will say that when Sandra
takes off the space suit,
she is damn sexy.

saw this movie monday night with the wife in IMAX 3D. Was really trying to find a non 3D IMAX screening of this movie, but couldn't find one locally. Glad I was forced into watching it in 3D as we both really enjoyed it. Perfect movie for 3D. Loved the cinematography of this movie...definitely the best part.

I'm even considering seeing it again in IMAX 3D. Not many movies make me want to shell out nearly 20 bucks, twice.

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX 3D. It's your standard stranded/survival story though the visual effects are really stunning. I enjoyed it. It's one of those movies that has to be seen on the big screen to really get the full experience.

A stunningly beautiful thrill ride from start to finish. Loved it!

Of course, for the NASA nerds, plenty of plot holes involving procedural spacecraft operations,
reentry procedures, reentry attitude and altitude to avoid burn-up
, etc.

But my advice is to see it! See it on the biggest screen you can! And hold onto your seat!

Why is the movie called "Gravity" anyway? It revolves around the lack of gravity. It should be called "Angular Momentum". </nasanerd>

The way I see it, gravity is a constant force in the film. Imperfect orbits, the fear of falling toward Earth in an uncontrolled way, the fear of being launched beyond the pull of Earth's gravity and sent out into space...

It's too bad the best option in most markets is IMAX 3D, which is unarguably an older and inferior 3D technology compared to RealD or Dolby 3D. The movie was never even shot for IMAX, but IMAX spends so much on marketing compared to the other 3D players that it's become synonymous with a premium theater experience.

Granted, if a movie was actually shot in IMAX (even part of it), such as The Dark Knight, IMAX is worth every cent.

I'm fortunate enough to live 15 minutes from a locally owned movie house that gives you an 80' 4K image, Dolby 3D and Dolby Atmos for $15/ticket. Dolby Atmos is only on about 600 screens in the country right now.

How do I know if a theater has Atmos? I searched the Dolby site and they referred me to my local theater.

I went to the local theater fandango, and the only "icons" are: IMAX 3D, ETX, RealD 3D

It will have a Dolby Atmos symbol if it applies....there is one @ Irvine Spectrum. In fact they have IMAX + Atmos.

I saw it there and will take jpeyton's advice and see it in non-Imax with Atmos the next time I go.

wtf man. It said the theater had some dolby atmos screens...from the dolby site...

Man, I remembered when the spectrum first opened ^_^ that movie theater was like, the second coming of christ at the time.

Anyone got a concise link about these various "tiers" of theater experience?

So other than the scenery and special effects/camera work there is nothing else to the movie right?

ie: primarily a fun rollercoaster ride but no story/plot etc..?

No. As I mentioned within the first few posts of this thread, you should not compare it to an amusement park ride. The special effects are nice, yes; but the story is also very well-written (albeit simple). It's not only a story of survival but also of human emotion. Sandra Bullock does a great job playing the human element of the movie.

If it were just a "rollercoaster ride" with no plot, it would not be getting ratings this high.

This is what I saw it on. I'll admit that I spent the whole time under the assumption that I was seeing something inferior to imax 3d. That's not because I've seen imax 3d recently, but rather because imax was so universally recommended that I thought what we had surely must not be as good.

When they really turned the 3d effects up for certain parts, shit looked like it was coming out of the screen into the theater for real. I was majorly impressed and wondering how the hell imax could possibly be better. I guess the answer is maybe it's not?

whenever i hear "IMAX," i expect one of those huge ass dome screens.

Everytime someone uses the term "LieMAX", I have to remind them that IMAX is a simply a brand, and not a specification. They're not obligated to set up the exact same screen with the same size/spec in every location where they are advertised. Use discretion when deciding which screen to go to.

My local IMAX screen isn't one of the huge 7-story tall ones, but it's still pretty damn good, so it works for me. There's a huge one about a 30-minute drive away from my house but I don't feel compelled enough to make the trip.

IMAX does help with immersion with this type of movie. I was impressed.

I would recommend it if you have a large screen near you.
