I'm watching this right now... I don't know if I can finish it. I'm crying halfway through as it is.

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

It's a Japanese animated film about a brother and his younger sister trying to survive after the bomb dropped in WWII.

It's about a Japanese teenager and his 4-year-old sister during the later years of WWII... both their parents die, they're left homeless, and end up wandering, looking for a place to live and food to eat. It's... one of the most honest movies I've ever seen; it contrasts the horrors of war and the innocence of a child...

Goddamn, I don't know how to describe it. There's a good review by Robert Ebert online.

Don't expect to do anything right afterwards... I don't know if I'll be able to do anything else for a few hours after this... it just makes you sit and think.

From the imdb review:

By the end, my friend and I were huddled together, pouring out tears I've never shed for any movie before.

Is this extremely lame, or am I imagining things?

Sounds like a 'shared moment'

Ebert review

This is a great movie. I didn't cry in it (my soul is a stone) but it's one of the saddest films I've seen. One thing that is apparent is a lack of a score playing throughout the movie (unlike those "sweeping" one in Disney flicks). I think this heightens the realism and lets you think about the movie as it's playing

That's why it was so painful for me to watch, I think... there was no ambient emotionalism to keep you going, it was just... there.

I think I saw Grave of the Fireflies when I was little. Don't remember much aobut it though. My friend has it on dvd..and i fully intend on borrowing it from him so I can see it again.

So it's sad, you say? Good...now I can have an excuse for crying.

Nope...but after reading this thread I'm going to have to track down a copy. I'm sure Blockbuster isn't going to have it. I'll have to check some of the more eclectic places here in town.

Meh, it was alright. It was sad, but I wasn't anywhere near crying.

Maybe because I like the deep evolving characters w/ massive drama anime. :p
