is that enough?

Thats enough. I only run 18a on the 12v rail and have no problems with my 6800GT @ ultra speeds

First I have an X800pro (ATI) several 9800pros(ATI), had a 6600GT for a few days (ugh) and a 6800GT. I had to try MANY drivers for teh ATI card, and settled on the 66.97 which I got from guru3d (can;t even get working drivers from nvidias site ??)

Anyway, it works fine now, but I do prefer the ATI screen (can't quantify why it looks better) and DEFINITELY THE DRIVER SUPPORT FROM ATI VS NVIDIA.

All that said, I think you either have a bad cards, or some drivers elsewhere or settings not right. TRy the 66.97's though.

yah, i tried the 66.97's already, I'm thinkin maybe the card isn't seated right, or i need drivers for my monitor, that's the last 2 things i haven't tried

ok, stupid question, since I've never dealt with a bad monitor or driver for it..how do I install an inf file for a monitor? Is it as simple as copying it from the driver cd from teh comp?

If it's a six year old gatewat monitor, Windows likely has that covered.
In display properties, does it say Default or Plug and Play monitor or something else?

Plug&play, and hten it lists like 3 default monitors...there's 4 things listed actually...that's kinda puzzling

I had a similar problem when playing diablo 2. The colors would turn purple and stuff. What I did was installed this Driver Cleaner utility. Basically, it will clean up old drivers that wern't uninstalled all the way. Read the instructions before you use it though. Then I installed the 66.93 driver from the nvidia website and all is well. Hope that helps. Your card isn't over heating is it?

Send it my way, I promise to return it to you if it works ;) you really need to post a pic, that should let you know if it's the monitor or not.

i hope it's not overheating, cause it happens as soon as i start the comp up...i've seen the problem you described smiley, this one's different...I"m going to be heading home soon, when I get there I'm going to take some screen shots of the darkness/horrid colors/awful display of pictures.

Di you say anywhere in this thread what resolution you have set to run your monitor and refresh rate?
I also believe that Win XP will properly recognize your monitor; but if you like its info is still on the Gateway website. Assuming that the vid cable is seated well and that the resolutions that you are running are not in excess of what your monitor can do, then I vote for an RMA.

the weird thing is, the screen shots don't look half as awful out of the game when i view them in windows...

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/accipiterq/my_photos

there's a few of em, the 'diablomenubrite' one is when i turned the briteness up on the nvidia settings. the weird thing is, it looks hideous in the game, like film after it's been overexposed, but doesn't look too hideous in the screen shots.....does anyone know where i can have pics displayed at full size...cuase yahoo's shrinkin em, and you can't really see the crapiness in full magnitude

Agreed, the low-res screenshots look fine. This really isn't consistent with anything video card related(the odds of just the DAC->output circuitry being damaged is low), so the photograph of the video card in action on the monitor would be nice.

Edit: It means there's a very good chance there's something wrong with your monitor and/or the cable that connects the monitor to your video card. That or you don't have something plugged in all the way.

Pics look fine, although small as heck. D2 is a pretty dark game. I think it's an issue with your old monitor. Get a new one.

I mean, what you're doing is like buying a brand new Dodge Viper, and putting the cheapest rubber you can find on it. The Viper isn't a bad car, but when you put bad tires on it, it's going to drive like ass. You're putting an awesome new rig on an anchient monitor, it's the same thing. Get a new one, you'll be much happier.

OK, After reading the rest of the thread I need to Recind my idea of an RMA! When you stated that you see 4 diff monitors listed, this tells me that you more than likely have old remnants of drivers, possibly even from a different type of card. Correct? If so, reformat the drive, if not, try drive cleaner.

I think he meant the Multi-monitor listings. When you click on the display box in the settings tab in display properties, it lists all the outputs.

thanks for that link ribbon...looks like I'm buyin a new monitor...haha..the old one always was a little dark...but this is ridiculous...I"m going to go home later today and check to make sure my video card is seated right, and try a different cable from teh monitor to the vid card and see if that helps....if not, new monitor time
