Too me, Doom 3 looks like it has the best graphics hands down out of those games. Farcry looks like it comes in 2nd, Stalker in 3rd, and Hl2 in last (last but still great). What do you guys think?

Did you see the new HL2 video released today? Why do you think the game was delayed? There were technical upgrades included in the delay as well. Make no mistake, on the appropriate hardware, just like D3, the GFX will rock. My order (which is tough to say since HL2 isnt even out, but this is what I expect):

1) Doom 3
2) HL2
3) Far Cry
4) Stalker

With the exception of the character models, doom 3 just isn't that impressive. The graphics aren't bad, but I don't see how they're blowing anyone away. The combination of suffocating darkness and the typical id 99 to 1 brown to other colors ratio just isn't doing anything for me. I have not completed Doom 3 yet, but I've yet to see anything as impressive as this or even this.

well..from the new video I've seen...HL2 looks really good. But no point in making a judgement until the game is release.

IMO the environments along with the lightning model in Doom3 are the most impressive aspects of the games graphics.
HL2 OTOH looks like it's aimed at providing impressive outdoor environments as well as character models.
FarCry definitely has the most impressive outdoor environments right now though, at least among the games I've played.
No idea about Stalker.

I pick Farcry, but I have only seen screenshots and/or short videos of the other 3. A tropical island with birds, jungle and so appeals to me. Some of the hang gliding scenes were quite stunning.

I think people are bashing D3's graphics because they're too subtle and realistic compared to the "LOOKATME!!!!" flash of the others. They're also bashing because it's the k3wl thing to do.

filerush has the new HL2 video.

My order:
1. Far Cry
2. HL2
3. D3

I haven't played or seen Stalker. I'm also not a big can of D3. I've been playing it, but to me the graphics just aren't all that great. I prefer Far Cry overall because of the outdoor environments. Maybe HL2 will be better, it remains to be seen. Video clips aren't a good way to compare games, who knows how good of a machine that video was made on. Maybe a $5000 rig that I'll never own?

I had a rather poor attitude of Stalker till i saw the LAST of the trailers marked DX9 features enabled..
it seems all the movies previous of this had all the DX9 stuff off.. which was making it look rather dated..
watch this movie then rate the games..
with DX9 turned on stalker looks great.

No, people are bashing Doom 3's graphics because they were hailed as some kind of second coming and turned out to be nothing revolutionary.

Wrong. "Revolutionary" has been defined as blocky alpha shadows and bright outdoor environments. "Oooooooh, pretty colors. r0XorZ!!!!" Whatever. And who exactly was hailing D3 as the Second Coming?

I'd kinda like to see how the doom3 engine does in outdoor environments, but judging from what mars looked like, my hopes aren't too high. On the otherhand, some of those city hl2 screenshots look photorealistic.

I'd have to vote for hl2. All doom3 has is really good lightning, and lots and lots of bump mapped textures.

F.E.A.R looks amazing too. I think Far Cry looks better than Doom 3.

Doom 3 vs HL2 vs Stalker vs Farcry
whats the obsession with Game A vs Game B these days? I find it even less comprehensable than the whole ati v nvidia, intel v amd stuff, since at least there you're probably going to have to choose between them.

Maybe I'm a little OT here since most people in this thread are agreeing all these games are/will be good, but more often than not its like "hl2 pwn0rz doom3" and all this fanboy crap. I realise some of these kiddies actually might only get enough pocket money for one game a year, and some people are genuinely dissapointed with a game (even those not yet released...), but whats with the desperation with aligning oneself with some product and tirelessly campaigning at every oppertunity that it pwns Game B, which of course clearly sux horrendously and anyone thinking otherwise is The Enemy.

My not so humble opinions ...

DOOM3
+ Anyone say lighting effects?
+ Bumpmaps. Lots and lots of shiny, reflective, pretty bumpmaps.
+ Haze, distortion, warping, skewing, projection ... OpenGL owns you. And your mother. And your dog.
+ Particle effects, such as Mars dust, rock.
- Eats videocards for breakfast and comes back for seconds

STALKER
+ Bitchin' weather effects
+ Foliage
+ Nice use of DX9 shaders
- Could potentially suffer from the Quake 1 "Identical Texture" issue

HL2
+ I don't think anything will touch this in the outdoor arena.
+ Just keeps getting better and better ...
- ... since it's not effing released yet ...

FarCry
+ Best Foliage Ever
- And that's all.

- M4H

DOOM3
+ Most impressive lighting affects to date
+ Bumpmaps. Lots and lots of shiny, reflective, pretty bumpmaps.
+ Haze, distortion, warping, skewing, projection ... OpenGL owns you. And your mother. And your dog.
+ Particle effects, such as Mars dust, rock.
+ Realistic, fluid models and animations
+ Extremely complex indoor environments
- Eats videocards for breakfast and comes back for seconds
- Dark (Sometimes hard to appreciate exactly what you are seeing -- IE the generator rooms)

STALKER
+ Bitchin' weather effects
+ Foliage
+ Nice use of DX9 shaders
- not out

HL2
+ Extensive outdoor environments
+ Destructable / Deformable objects (more engine than graphics)
+ Impressive face models / skins
- not out

FarCry
+ Awesome use of foliage
+ Beautiful water
+ Extensive outdoor environments
- Basic models
- Indoor environments lack detail

I'm just going to quote this and even out / add my opinions since I agree with most of it. And since I like the format

Before doom 3 came out graphics are all anyone talked about. They were supposed to be great, a huge advancement.....so on and so forth. As it turns out, most people seem to believe they're not deserving of the hype. You could make a good argument that nothing is ever deserving of the hype, but regardless I'm sticking to my opinion that besides the character models, it's just not that impressive. You may think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread but it's just not doing anything for me. Oh and the "leet" speak isn't needed. Come on now.

whats the obsession with Game A vs Game B these days?

It's always been like that. It's natural. Everyone wants to compare everything to everything else, that's just the way it is. And I really don't see any "fanboi" behavior here.

I've got an idea, why dont you WAIT to compare games until all are actually released and you have gotten a chance to actually play them... sound good?

To be completely fair you'd have to wait until the last one is out and then replay all 4 of them again. Taking screenshots and videos of all the examples of graphical achievements and looking online for technical information for each game's engine. But that would be too much work for a simple thread on atot :)
