graphics cards, xp and harddrive simple questions :)

ok, i'm buying a new sytem soon and don't know the answers to these questions

1.Do geforce 2 ti 200 (64mb) suck? will it act as a bottle neck in a athlon 1700xp,512mb DDR ram system?

2.for an older game like half life and TFC or counterstrike, will having a geforce 2 or 3 in a xp 1700xp, 512mb ddr make any difference or does it max out anyway at 100fps (what i heard)?

3. what would be the pentium 4 equivilent or a 1700xp? (not that i'll get a p4 just wondering 😉)

4.will having an Ata 100 5400rpm harddrive with buffer reach no where near the performance of an Ata 133 7200rpm drive with a 2mb buffer, what will the slower one do, increase loading times, drop framerates, be more vunruble to crash?

5. how powerfull are the XP range expected to go, so i can upgrade in the future?

thank u 🙂

1. For your graphics card, the only time you may see it as a bottleneck could be in 3dmark 2001, any games that you would play probably wouldnt use its full power.

2. What difference does it make if you max out? above 60 fps you really cant tell any difference.

3. Probably a P4 1.8, it would easily beat a 1.7 P4 with the same specs.

4. You'll just have slightly higher access times and things may take a little longer to load, i dont see this causing any serious problems though.

5. No clue, but i keep hearing about that thoroughbred thats susposed to be coming out, but i guess it still might be socket A and your motherboard manufacture would probably have an update in bios to allow you to use it.

1) The graphics card is fine, but newer games on like 1280 res may suffer.
2) Once again, 60fps is good.
3) If the XP1700+ is on KT266A, and the P4 is on i845D, a P4 2.0 would probably be equivalent. Remember XP 1800+ beating P4 2.0? Now i845D is popular, and it slows down P4 a little.
4) Get a fast HDD, as long as you're not paying too much. Fast = good 🙂
5) XP chips will be shrunken to the T-bred. AMD expects around PR 3000+ chips by the end of the year. They may be Barton based. Your board is good until Hammer comes out, hopefully.

I just built my first rig this week (!) using similar components. See "the workstation" in my sig. I used an Athlon XP 1600+ and a Radeon 7500 Retail (used on WinXP Pro). I really like the Radeon 7500 as it overclocks nicely and has great 2D and DVD performance. I'm running it @ 330 core /277 DDR mem using no modifications, stock is 290/230.

I really recommend the 7200 rpm hard drive, it makes a noticeable difference over the 5400 RPMer in my other rig.

As for the GF3, get it if your budget allows it, the difference will likely be noticeable, but not huge (assuming you're talking about a Ti200 at stock speeds).

Neutralizer, wth are you doing? Get on an IM client this instant! 🙂

Anyway, if you haven't got a board yet, stay away from KT266 no matter what.

well i'm not sure the site doesn't give an exact name, heres the specs though

Athlon DDR/XP enabled

Form Factor - ATX
CPU Architecture - Socket A
Chipset - VIA KT266
Frontside Bus - 266/200MHz
Memory Support - 3x DDR DIMM
Maximum Memory - 3Gb
AGP Slot - 1x AGP Pro/AGP 4x
PCI Slot - 5x
ACR Slot - 1x
IDE Controller - 2x UDMA-100
Serial Ports - 2x UART
Parallel Ports - 1x EPP/ECP
USB Ports - 6x
Compliancy - PC99

Definetly go either KT266A or Sis735/745, stay away from the KT266.

If you want to keep it cheap, get either a Shuttle AK3.1 Rev 3 (KT266A-based) or an ECS K7S5A / K7S6A (Sis735/745) based. IMHO, the Shuttle or the ECS K7S5A are your best bets.

<< ok, i'm buying a new sytem soon and don't know the answers to these questions

No, they're decent, but if you have the $, go for a GF3 Ti200. It runs fine on my 1600+, except when I turn on FSAA on Max Payne... hehe

<< 2.for an older game like half life and TFC or counterstrike, will having a geforce 2 or 3 in a xp 1700xp, 512mb ddr make any difference or does it max out anyway at 100fps (what i heard)? >>

512 ddr won't affect your gameplay. Usually it would be the video ram, but u've got plenty. Besides 256 MB is enough. For those, a gf2 pro could handle it with no prob. Usually ur fps would max out at 60 or whatever ur refresh rate is because of vsync.

<< 3. what would be the pentium 4 equivilent or a 1700xp? (not that i'll get a p4 just wondering 😉) >>

a 1700+ could easily take on a p4 1.7. I say it would be the equivalent of a p4 1.8. In some scenarios, the AXP 1700+ can beat a 2.0 GHz P4 "Williamette"

<< 4.will having an Ata 100 5400rpm harddrive with buffer reach no where near the performance of an Ata 133 7200rpm drive with a 2mb buffer, what will the slower one do, increase loading times, drop framerates, be more vunruble to crash? >>

You'll never reach the max capacity of ata100 so don't even bother about ata133. A 7200 rpm is significantly faster than 5400 rpm, but I think it is also a bit louder too.

<< 5. how powerfull are the XP range expected to go, so i can upgrade in the future? >>

Don't worry as long as the proc is socket a it should work in ur mobo. The XP range will reach about 2600+, i think before thoroughbred takes over... i think... u can upgrade all the way until Hammer comes out.

ABout ATA133 hard drives: they're faster than ATA100 hard drives becasue they're newer and technologically better. Neutralizer was trying to say that ATA133 controllers aren't necessary (controllers) since even the fastest ATA133 drives only do like 50MB transfer max, so an ATA66 controller is sufficient. But do go for ATA133 drives.

does havin that mother board really mater? i mean i'm buying this as a complete system ,not building my own. what is so bad about it? i won't be overclocking or anything. dam i thought i had everything sorted out lol
