need to upgrade system for windows 7.
will install more ram and psu.
problem is which graphics card.
i need agp 9x for windows
i have not an idea
what size card and fit
if i upgrade mother board psu and ram what graphics card can i use.
any suggestions.

I imagine you're on an extremely tight budget. But there's no getting around the fact that AGP has been dead for some time now. Relative to their performance you're going to be paying an arm and a leg for an AGP card, so I'm not sure it would be worth the cost.

Otherwise if you did a full system overhaul, then you could use a modern PCI-Express card.

Ugh, even if you upgrade the ram, psu, and video card, that system will be dreadfully slow.

You really should just use that money to put towards a nice cheap H81 chipset board, a Pentium G3220, and a 4GB stick of DDR3 memory.

For like $200 you can buy yourself a decent system that is going to be like 10x faster than your current ancient machine.

I wouldn't trust a PSU as old as the one in there must be. We also don't know what case he has.

Hello, Kevin, and welcome to the forums!

First thing I notice is you are from Ireland, so prices from US shops aren't going to mean anything to you.

Secondly, is there any particular reason you are trying to upgrade about a 12+ year old machine? Technology has advance so far in that time that my cell phone is likely faster than your computer.

Finding parts for that old of a machine is going to be difficult, and frankly pretty useless. Even if you add more RAM and the fastest AGP video card ever made (HD 3850 if I'm not mistaken) you are still going to be sitting on a machine that is slower than a low end machine today with integrated graphics.

As these others have recommended, don't put any cash into that old PC, instead buy something new (or even from a generation or two back, used - great bargains around if you look) and don't look back. If you have data or pictures or something on the old PC you can fairly easily transfer those onto the new machine. And overall you will be much, much happier with a newer system.

All Pentium 4's (with the possible half-exception of the last Cedar Mills in a decent mainboard) are pretty much unsalvageable. DDR1 is pretty much impossible to find in sufficient capacity, and DDR2 is extremely expensive for anything worthwhile. Even if you manage to find a decent AGP card, it will be at least 6-7 generations behind current tech and will lack such today common things of HD video acceleration. For basic use you're much better of with even the lowest-end current IGP.
