I guess it's worth a shot for a few bucks. I'll give it a try and report back. Thanks for your help.

In the meantime, if anyone has further thoughts on how to utilize the (possibly AUX) 6-pin connector from my PSU, I'd appreciate any input.
 
Let us know how it goes. I am still stumped by your issue because I really do think that the cable from the PSU must be a 6-pin PCI-E. I believe you when you say it's not, but i find it hard to believe that it could be anything else. Hope it all works out.
 
Yeah, it does look awfully like a PCI-e connector. But the pins don't line up. The pins on the PCI-E connector are bunch up too close together to fit into the mystery connector from my PSU.

EDIT: Tried it one more time tonight, just for good measure. Definitely does not fit.
