Graphics Card Overheating?

I recently bought this graphics card. It had good reviews so I gave it a go.. since install my computer has been freezing completely, cant move the mouse or anything. I have a 550W PSU so I doubt thats a problem.. The weird thing is that it happens outside of games.. Could a graphics card overheat and cause a lockup when its not doing anything?

thanks in advance

The user reviews on that card leave me wondering a bit. One guy says no heatsink, only a thermal pad while another says nice hs/fan, hmm...

I've seen new graphics cards where they failed to properly apply thermal paste or otherwise make good contact with the heatsink. I suppose you've physically inspected the card, yes?

OK.. this is actually my problem...my p/s is an ATADC Silence Blue 550W. the card is the HIS Hightech X1600PRO IceQ. the heatsink and fan are huge...the heatsink is at least 1in tall and like 6in long and it covers the whole card. the fan is slightly over the tip of the card. thats how huge it is. i have no idea what is the problem.. it locks up,..freezes, and the screen blinks then just goes black.. plz help me. thnx.

I may have fixed the problem... i took out my cold cathode lights and 1 pci slot fan and installed different drivers for it.. omega drivers. now ive been using it hevily for about an hour now and no freezes!.... sweet. tested in 3d mark, css , oblivion.. no freezing. ill post again if i encounter ne more problems. thx to all that posted.

new problem... everytime i restart my computer it reverts itself to 4-bit color and 640 x 480 res.. and it wont let me change it. plz help.

That power supply, can you link us to the product on the Internet... I can't really find it but it might be a Powmax with only 20A on 12V

The PSU has to go... if you don't want to spend too much on it, at least go with a fsp/fortron, or at the very least, epower, thermaltake, or some cheaper sparkles on newegg.

that psu has been powering 2 coldcathode lights, 3 case fans 2 drives, hd, floppy, card reader, and a 6200 for over 2 monthes now...

Just because it has not failed completely doesn't mean it's powering your equipment properly. It's listed as having 20A on the 12v rail - that's crap for a "550W" supply, and it's probably overrated at that.

You wouldn't catch me putting that in my computer, or even standing near it while it's on 🙂
