Graphics card decision

Hi all,

I have been pondering the decision to buy a new graphics card. I am not a big FPS gamer, but things like Crysis are getting me interested. I have recently really enjoyed playing Call of Duty and have always been a fan of Doom and Quake (until it scares me too much).

This leads me to considering an upgrade. Should I go for something like a GeForce 7950 GX2 or one that can support DX10 like the GeForce 8800 GTS (640 meg). Or even one of the X1950 cards? I know they are expensive cards, but I want to 'future proof' myself as best as possible.

The graphics card is about the slowest item on my main machine at the moment. Any more of an upgrade would mean a new machine.

Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Perhaps you should wait till those dx10 games come out, by then there might be a 8900, and that should make all the 8800's drop in price. Because right now there dx10 performance is okay, but nothing to rave about. To bad really, since I own a 8800gts 320mb, I can only pray it will run Crysis decently in dx10 mode.

The x1950xt 256mb at 150$ is a really nice card btw, and I'm pretty sure it will run crysis pretty well in dx9. It could be a nice card to hold you over untill nvidia/ati hit us with some real dx10 monstercards.

I'd wait for next gen graphic cards. If you are desperate for a decent graphic card, buy a 7900 KO and screw dx10 until it's actually required (hint, more than a year)

DX10 actually IS required - right now - for max setting in CoJ and Lost Planet, for example
-and they look good

what resolution are you gaming at OP?

if you want to enjoy Crysis at decent DX9 settings, i'd got for the fastest card you can afford ... if you want to wait till Crysis is actually out and read the reviews, that is fine also

what is in your rig right now?
