Graphics aparture size what and how? and does it matter?

Hey there long time since I been in here, and non of you probably remember me 😉

Anyway what is the 'graphics aparture size' setting in BIOS on my P4B533-V mobo from Asus?. I have a V8440 vid-card from Asus with the TI4400 chipset from Nvidia. It has 128Mb so I set the Graphics aparture size to 128 but after post the error-msg arrives: 'can't read - ESCD' or something like that. When I changed the aparture size to 64Mb it disappeared (And that was one of the last things I tried 😛)

So has it any useful matter or?

Regards

AoD 😉

The graphics aparture size is the amount of system memory that the graphics card is allowed to use. It doesn't reserve it in any way, so there is no penalty for setting it higher unless you dont have much ram and want to play 3D games. I usually set it qt 64mb on machines that have 256mb ram and 128mb on rigs with 512mb ram. I currently have a 4200 with 128, 512mb, and have the setting at 128mb. I have never seen your problem arise from changing that setting.

Sometimes fiddling with that setting can cause an array of problems. I once tried 256 after upgrading to 1 GB of RAM and Windows locked trying to show nvidia's driver control panel.

I've always heard you should set it to half the ammount of system memory, but that may be getting out of date in these days of 128MB video cards and 1GB main memory systems. Maybe someone can give an updated guideline?

This is a pretty good question. I don't know any technical answer, but I can tell you that going from 64mb to 256mb aperature (I have a gb of ram) severely reduced performance in simcity 4. I don't know why. I don't think most modern cards need a huge ap anyway, the onboard ram should be sufficient-

It matters, not by much though. I have always heard that it should be 25% of your systems memory.

There are some benches floating on some site and if I remember correctly, games crashed when the size was set to the lowest.

Edit: I googled it, enjoy. Ahh, the joy of being unemployed 🙁.
