graphical analysis of the post count acceleration phenomenon

Rallispec

Lifer
graph

as you will notice-- the number of posts steadily increases.. taking 5 months to reach 1k, but only 2 more months to reach 2k and 1 more month to reach 3k, and now 1 more month nearly be at 5k. The theory applies to everyone.. everybody posts more as they go along. Now we just need to find out the acceleration of posting.

interesting.... i'm working on a coming up with an equation or formula for this now.

🙂

(yes. i have way too much free time on my hands)

Change the y axis scale to a logarithmic scale and you should be able to get an equation by doing the line of best fit.

no kidding, way too much free time...you joined a month earlier and have over three times as many posts as me. Gotta admit, though, you're not as bad as some people here. 🙂

yeah.. i tried doing that but it kept coming up weird-- i think its should be an exponential equation, however i'm using excell 97 and for some reason that trendline option was greyed out... and then i closed out excell without saving it and now i dont feel like re-adding the data.

What are you talking about? Ralli's post count is way too high for only joining in July 2001.😉

yeah, just imagine if i joined in august like all these other cool people. 🙂

nef?? how dare you.... this thread is a serious matter and contains high levels of smartness... dont come in here and disgrace ralli's studies and research w/ you're neffing....😉

thank you sandigga...

i'm heading back to the labratory now.. time for more high levels of smartness

somebody help me figure this out...

minendo figured the formula out to be y = 15.6x day-- but that is just an average.. becuase 15.6 is my post per day average. the formula needs to be exponential.. like y= 6x^2 + 10x.. but its been so long since i've done math and excell isnt working for me so i cant figure out the equation.
here is the data:

7/26/01 : 0 posts
12/19/01 : 1000 posts
02/10/02 : 2000 posts
05/05/02 : 4000 posts
06/13/02 : 5000 posts

i know if we put our heads together, we can unravel the mystery behind post count acceleration.

Damn Danny maybe you should sign up for the summer semesters or somethin' your waaay too bored lately 🙂

I don't think the first couple of months can be factored, as either you're just coming out of your shell or you're a natural born nefaholic.

notice that if you have

y = kx^n
then

log y = log k + log x ^n
log y = n log x + log k

which is in the form y = mx + b
and you can graph it on logx-logy axis, forming a line

now find the intercept... log k = y-intercept solve for k
now find the slope ... that's n

now go back to your original equation and plug in n and k and you have your parabolic equation

this only works for parbolas starting at the origin, which yours does not. so it gets more complicated, but taht ought to get you started

just another variable that needs to be factored into the equation... i started out with only 5 posts per day.. were as gopunk probably started at 25 or so posts per day.. so original post per day average would have to be taken into consideration.. becuase now i'm up to 15 and gopunk is up to 45
